Job Description

Position Title: Sensei

Department: LEAN

Purpose: Partners with senior and department managers to drive breakthrough improvements in cost, quality initiatives. Serves as a mentor and coach within Genesis Health System's LEAN Transformation and provides leadership, vision, coordination and functional direction to the leadership team. Emphasis will be placed on Lean Strategy development, the deployment of Lean methodology, change management and problem solving. Provides expert guidance on Genesis Health System's Lean Transformation. Provides expert consultation to executives and leaders at all levels of the organization on the use of Lean and continuous improvement techniques. Serves as the Executive Lean Team Sensei. Serves as the Executive Lean Steering Committee's Sensei. Consults with business leaders to identify, assess and prioritize opportunities. Facilitates coaching and development of leaders at all levels.

Supervisory Responsibility: Advanced Direction: The job requires some accountability for scheduling, assigning, or coordinating work. The employee will check the quality of work, provide guidance, instruction, training, and direction to others. The job requires some formal or official supervisory responsibility. The individual serves as a group leader and acts in an assistant supervisory or lead role. In addition, the employee is expected to provide information or suggestions on human resources matters.

Materials Responsibility: Moderate: Work requires moderate responsibility for material resources. Examples of resources could include operating budgets for a work unit or department, specialized equipment, costly or unusual materials or supplies, large amounts of cash or other material assets. The employee has a moderate amount of control over these resources. The cost of errors might result in moderate damage, waste or financial loss. The difficulty, variety and depth of problems associated with these material resources is moderately complex.

Education: Bachelor's Degree

Field Of Study: Engineering, Science, Operations or Business required.

Special Training: Formal LEAN training

Training Preferred: LEAN healthcare experience preferred.


Experience: More than 10 years experience required.

Interpersonal Skills: Interaction is with a variety of people inside or outside the organization. Communications are of moderate difficulty and sensitivity. Contact with others may involve detailed & lengthy dialogues & exchanges of information. Requires a moderate amount of interpersonal skills. Interactions involve dealing with moderately complicated problem situations or stressful encounters.

Physical Demands: Low Intensity: Work requires a light or low amount of physical exertion. The job requirements for manual dexterity or physical manipulation are limited. The need for physical stamina and endurance is of minimal or low significance. The degree of physical strain produced on the job is somewhat taxing, but does not usually produce fatigue and require periods of rest. Freedom of movement exists, and the job does not confine the employee to a prescribed body posture. Body movement usually involves sitting and intermittent walking. The position exceeds these demands occasionally, 10-35% of the time.
