Job Description

Purpose of the Engineer I, Circuit Position: Circuit Engineer will be responsible for the engineering part of a major project or entire project of lesser complexity. The circuit engineer will use and apply engineering principals that require a broad knowledge base of electronics; work and applied research, development, and circuit designs; ensuring equipment and facilities are assigned and procured. Is the subject matter expert and works closely with order management and network design systems and collaborating directly with other engineering disciplines and project management teams completing the circuit design and meeting committed delivery dates.

Essential Duties of Position Performed at All Levels:

* Design circuits and provide complete, accurate circuit layout records (CLRs). Perform analysis and testing using specific equipment.
* Responsible for the entire design process from conception to finished unit.
* Coordinate multiple orders; simple to complex facilitating a smooth order process. Provide access service request (ASR) requirements from DS1's to Ethernet orders to circuit coordinators.

* Review orders for validity and ensure equipment and facilities are available to meet circuit requirements.

* Submit engineering service requests (ESRs) for network equipment or facilities and track ESR's until the equipment is installed and ready for consumption. Submit purchase orders (POs) for equipment required for circuit designs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Demonstrated knowledgeable of practical application of engineering science and technology applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design.

* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of analog and digital circuit design.

* Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles' involved.

* Knowledge of IP Telephony and Multiprotocol Label Switching technology

* Critical thinking, complex problem solving, system analysis, operation monitoring required.

* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various types of transmission facilities to include: fiber optic, microwave, radio, satellite, and copper.

* Knowledge and understanding of various multiplexing techniques, along with compression and echo cancellation equipment.

* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of digital cross connect systems.

* Ability to conceptualize both circuit and network layouts and designs (visual representation of a circuit as it overlays on a network design).

* Written communication and comprehension required to present ideas in writing so others will understand.

* Verbal communication - ability to understand information as presented as well as communicate information and ideas so others will understand.

* Deductive reasoning to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers.

* Knowledge of a company network functionality.

* Knowledgeable of a variety of hardware and software for transmission equipment in a company network system.

Additional Job Requirements: Entry level for the degreed Circuit Engineer position and will work under direct supervision applying engineering principals that require a broad knowledge base of electronics; work and applied research, development, and circuit designs; ensuring equipment and facilities are assigned and procured Will work closely with order management and network design systems and collaborating with other engineering disciplines completing the circuit design and meeting committed delivery dates.

* Minimum one year experience within the discipline for the degreed engineer.

* Experience with circuit delivery, providing facility assignments, and/or designing circuits within a telecommunications environment is preferred.

* High School diploma or equivalent required.
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Telecommunications or related field is required.
* In addition to minimum experience required, a combination of relevant education and work experience sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
* Industry specific certifications are highly valued.

Physical Requirements: Primarily sedentary office work with some travel to remote locations across the state of Alaska and Washington where indoor and outdoor work may be required. Physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, using hand tools and repetitive motions. Clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs

Working Conditions: Most activities conducted inside under pleasant climatic conditions. Work can be intense and stressful due to time/resource limitations when scheduling multiple tasks with inflexible deadlines. Travel for business and training purpose may be required.

GCI and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. As such, you will be requested to provide emergency after hours contact numbers, to include your home and cell phone numbers if you have those services.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
