What will you be doing?

This position leads the planning and project management activities for capital investments at GATX's owned repair facilities. This role works directly with 8 fixed repair locations and 5 customer sites and will coordinate closely with the Facility Engineering, Procurement, Finance and other functions to prioritize and execute on significant capital projects. The role also manages the pipeline management and approval process for of all capital investments related to the facilities.

This role works across Operations at different levels including directly with facilities and facility managers. This role will also have significant interaction with VPs and managers across the Operations team as well as other corporate functional areas including IT, Accounting and Legal. The individual will have the support of the Operations Finance team while being responsible for ensuring that projects are thoroughly analyzed, significant issues are fully disclosed and that those presented for approval constitute quality investments.

What are your key activities?

* Develop, lead and continuously improve a process for identifying, prioritizing and managing facility capital investments.
* Work with shop leadership and Facility Engineering to identify and prioritize capital investments consistent with operational Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC) objectives.
* Investments may include track, key repair equipment (cleaning, finishing, etc.), employee facilities and shop infrastructure equipment (buildings, compressors, etc.). Investments may also involve large-scale facility reconfiguration/expansion projects.
* Lead the continued development of the capital investment approval process and work with shop leaders to assist in the analysis and creation of capital approval requests.
* In conjunction with the Investment Analysis group, develop and maintain financial models to assess the costs and benefits of capital projects.
* Collaborate with Procurement and Manufacturing Engineering to identify preferred vendors and equipment
* Develop and manage the ongoing reporting of capital projects to the Operations leadership team.


* Lead the planning, approval and implementation process for all major capital projects.
* Perform the project manager role for major capital projects for both individual facilities and multiple facilities/network capital initiatives (IT projects, equipment standardization, etc.)
* Work closely with Facility Engineering and Procurement to determine equipment specifications, costs and benefits.
* Oversee the process for capital expenditure approvals and investment justifications. Prepare detailed written proposals and guide the transactions through the approval process.
* Work with various functional areas including Legal and Procurement to negotiate contracts and monitor contract performance.
* Lead the project execution phase with close collaboration with Manufacturing Engineering to provide timely updates to Operations Management.



What is required of you?

* Undergraduate degree required preferably in a business-related discipline
* MBA highly desirable
* An understanding of accounting and financial analysis for capital investments
* Prior work experience in a project management role preferred
