Job Description

Southwest Division Engineering Department but will also be supporting projects throughout the US and Canada. You will provide optimized technical solutions aimed at saving both, construction time and cost, while minimizing risk and increasing safety and quality. You will contribute through all phases of project delivery, from concept designs through final construction documentation.

You will be reporting directly to Flatiron's Chief Geotechnical Engineer. Your focus will be on major transportation and heavy civil projects such as bridges, highways, roads and interchanges, rail transit, runways, dams, water treatment and storage facilities. Design topics include: geotechnical investigation and monitoring, design of temporary earth retention systems (shoring) and slopes, interpretation of investigation and monitoring results, development of appropriate geotechnical models and soil parameters, shallow and deep foundations, underpinning, pavements, groundwater control, prediction/calculation of settlements, seismic and building dynamics and soil liquefaction, and good structural understanding. Must be able to prioritize assignments and meet competing requirements.


* Provide Project Engineering duties including, but not limited to, performing geotechnical engineering calculations, analysis and design of temporary works, and peer/constructability reviews.
* Prepare basis of design, specifications, drawings, reports and technical documents.
* Plan, supervise and interpret geotechnical field / laboratory investigations and monitoring
* Support design coordination and liaise with Clients and Subcontractors.
* Make project engineering decisions within the bounds set by applicable policies, standards, guidelines and contract commitments.
* Deliver designs within budget, program and quality constraints.
* Follow technical processes, procedures and promote a culture that is dedicated to quality. Support continuous improvement, change management and risk management efforts.
* Work effectively at all phases of projects through bidding, planning, delivery and construction.
* Perform additional assignments as directed by the management team.


* Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering plus a Master's Degree in Geotechnical engineering
* 5 years of relevant experience in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred but not required
* Prior experience working for a construction or consulting engineering firm is preferred but not required
* Solid understanding of constructability and construction practices
* Understanding of soil - structure interaction with an ability to translate into realistic structural analysis
* Experienced in use of design software for geotechnical and structural analysis and experience with numerical computations
* Good knowledge of methodologies, products and costs
* Solid written and oral English skills are required
* Active Professional Engineer License in CA preferred; an ability to obtain a California G.E. License is required
* PhD Degree in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred
