This job opening is an opportunity to become an integral part of the in-house legal team at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. We are seeking an energetic attorney with 5 -7 years of legal experience to join a small, dynamic team of lawyers that provides research, legal advice, and counsel on a variety of topics and issues. This individual will work with many internal client departments and with individuals from all levels of the organization, as well with legal colleagues from other Reserve Banks and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for rendering legal advice, counsel, and/or guidance on a broad range of financial services, regulatory, corporate and transactional, employment, tenant leasing, intellectual property, payments and/or litigation matters that fall within the domain of the Legal Department.

Principal Accountabilities:

1. Serve as in-house counsel to specified departments within the Bank, depending on areas of expertise.

2. Structure, draft, negotiate and review contracts, service agreements and requests for proposals and other procurement documents.

3. Research and prepare legal memoranda, and render advice on various topics for Reserve Bank staff and management.

4. Respond to inquiries from public and legal professionals, and speak publicly, on matters/areas of responsibility.

5. Participate in select System workgroups and work on other special projects. Assist the General Counsel and Associate General Counsels and other attorneys with their System responsibilities.

6. Teach and speak publicly on issues and other legal topics to industry groups and organizations, the public, and other legal professionals.

7. Work with Board legal staff on legal matters.

8. Seek to provide thought leadership and strategic thinking contributions to clients and the Bank more broadly.

Other Accountabilities:

Perform other duties as assigned.


This position is not required to directly supervise others. The incumbent may be requested to supervise an occasional intern or law clerk.

Knowledge and Experience:

Completion of a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school, admission to the Massachusetts Bar, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required. Qualifications include: strong drafting, negotiating and analytic, written and oral communication skills; ability to juggle multiple client requests and needs and to adjust priorities; willingness to spend the time necessary to meet demanding deadlines; willingness to collaborate yet work independently and with minimal supervision/direction; ability to think creatively and strategically; strong attention to detail; receptivity to continuous learning; and, ability to demonstrate professional demeanor at all times. Law firm or agency experience could be a plus.

This position also requires applicable licensing, certification or registration.

The duties of this position require access to sensitive confidential supervisory information and/or work supporting the Bank's role as fiscal agent to the U.S. Treasury.

Accordingly, under applicable federal regulations and a U.S. Treasury directive, U.S. citizenship is required.

All employees assigned to this position will be subject to FBI fingerprint/ criminal background and Patriot Act/ Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) watch list checks at least once every five years.
