FBI Intelligence Analysts collect and gather information from a wide range of sources, draw conclusions, and make actionable and strategic recommendations to key decision-makers on a variety of threats and cases. Intelligence Analysts engage in work ranging from counterterrorism to organized crime, cyber, and beyond.

You are a self-starter who is able to dig deep and to spot details others might overlook. You are comfortable in many different situations, familiar or new, which can range from briefing high-level executives to working with Special Agents to interview a victim on a case. You are collaborative, driven, analytical, organized, detail-oriented, adaptable, and, of course, a great writer.

Once you have met all the core employment requirements noted above, you must meet the additional requirements for the Intelligence Analyst position below:

IA applicants:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Must have one of the 2018-2019 desired skills/educational backgrounds, and/or work experiences listed. (see below)
  • Must submit a complete application with all required documents including official or unofficial transcripts.  If required documents are not received by the closing of this vacancy, your application will be rejected.
  • Must successfully pass a series of assessments, known as the IA Selection Process (IASP).
  • Must successfully pass all phases of the FBI Background Investigation, including a polygraph exam and a drug screening.
  • Must successfully complete the 12-week Intelligence Basic Field Training Course (BFTC) at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. This is a full-time in-residence program.
  • Must sign a mobility service agreement indicating your willingness to relocate to any field office, based on the needs of the FBI. Applicants will receive some moving expenses based your new office assignment.
  • Must adhere to the two-year probationary period starting from the effective date of their assignment.

Major Duties

Intelligence Analysts (IAs) at the FBI are on the front-line of protecting America's national security.

As an IA you will:

  • Collect and combine disparate bits of information from a wide array of sources, such as local and national intelligence databases, as well as from information-sharing programs with local, state, federal, and international partners;
  • Use language, cultural, historical, and specialized knowledge to form an integrated picture of criminal, national security and public safety matters;
  • Gather and analyze collected intelligence to develop fact-based, actionable conclusions which you will draft into intelligence reports and briefing materials; and
  • Consolidate and analyze all relevant data to create and maintain awareness for your office/unit’s area of responsibility and priority threats, including observed and potential threat components, indicators, and vulnerabilities discovered through your research.

Now more than ever, the global intelligence workforce must seamlessly combine their talents to protect the nation.

Location: At the FBI, flexibility is key. Intelligence Analysts must be prepared and willing to be assigned according to the needs of the Bureau. You must be willing to be placed in any of the FBI’s 56 field offices or any Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

How do we select candidates for each location? The FBI will make final placements based on the best possible match for the needs of the Bureau. You will rank all 56 field offices in order of preference when you report to Quantico’s Basic Field Training Course (BFTC). Please review the IA Candidate Information Packet for further details

Desired Skills, Educational Backgrounds, and/or Work Experience for 2018-2019

Although the FBI welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, we currently prefer individuals who possess the following specialized work and/or educational experiences:

Cyber:  Those with a degree(s) or experience in computer forensics, computer engineering, information assurance/security, computer science, information science, programming, coding, ethical/white hat hacking, telecommunications security, encryption, data science, data analytics, social media analytics, information tech, virtualization software, open source applications, Microsoft technologies or wireless technologies. We are looking for people who can use their cyber expertise to identify threats.

National Security Studies: Those with degree(s) or experience in counterterrorism, foreign affairs, international migration/or relations, political science, conflict mitigation, diplomacy or world religions (Middle Eastern and Islamic studies). You are the kind of thinker who can combine your expertise will have a real impact with respect to the FBI’s threats.

Foreign Area Study/Foreign Language:  Those raised speaking a non-English language, who may have taught it for a few years, or even participated in intensive learning before going overseas to use it. Those who have spent time studying the history, politics and culture of those areas of the world or who have degree(s) pertaining to the Middle East and areas near East or Central Asia. Those who speak Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Pashtu, Russian, or Urdu and/or have studied abroad, experienced extensive travel, have short or long-term work experience overseas or experience working with other international government agencies. You are bringing your experience of the world's cultures to the table.

Law:  A law clerk, paralegal, or experienced lawyer who continuously seeks out new and creative ways to find relevant information and distill it into manageable and digestible analysis. You use your legal degree(s) or experience working for NGOs/non-profits, and/or multinational businesses in general law, international law, or as a paralegal to do work that asks people to think of something bigger.

Hard Sciences:  Those with a degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or physical science or who have skills in evidence collection/analysis and want to solve international crimes using scientific methodologies. You bring science to the fight.

Finance/Banking - International:  Those with accounting, economics, securities or finance degrees who possess experience in money laundering, securities fraud, healthcare fraud or who has experience working in banking or with federal and/or state agencies detecting fraud. We need people who can use their expertise/who possess a keen eye in identifying financial patterns.

Intelligence Studies:  Those with degree(s) in intelligence, homeland security, geospatial systems, geography, government policy, or military sciences or people with experience in OSINT, MASINT, SIGNT, HUMINT, GEOINT, ARCGis, or Geospatial analysis, and socio/political/geopolitical expertise. You understand how to identify/communicate threats from a different global optic.

Media Analysis:  Those with degree(s) or experience in media science, social media analysis/or marketing, data analytics, and open source exploitation. You know how to analyze data and use it to tell a story about someone’s habits in daily life.

Liberal Arts:  Those with degree(s) in journalism, English/writing, history, and library sciences or experience as a writer/editor or investigative reporter. You are someone who leaves no stone unturned and who hates dead ends.

Criminology:  Those with degree(s) in forensic science, behavioral analysis or criminal justice or experience as a military or local police officer and you dreamed of solving crimes.

Qualifications and Evaluations

The basic qualification for this position is a Bachelor’s degree. If your degree is not in one of the desired skills/fields listed in the chart above, you should have work experience in one of those identified areas, in addition to your degree.

New Intelligence Analysts enter the FBI at the Grade 7 (GS 7) or Grade 9 (GS 9), according to the Office of Personnel Management’s general pay schedule.

To qualify for the GS 7:

You must either Have completed a Bachelor's degree with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher to qualify under Superior Academic Achievement


Have completed one full year of graduate level education


Meet the definition of a Graduating Senior and you are expected to complete all degree requirements within nine months of application in one of the desired fields.


Have completed a bachelor’s degree outside of one of the desired fields of study AND have at least one year of entry-level work experience in a field related to one of the desired skill sets listed above.  Your entry-level work experience (equivalent to the Grade 5) must have included:

  • Working on a project or in a job where you had to collect information from various sources and make decisions based on requirements you were given
  • Communicating orally and in writing

GS 7 Salary 

The base salary for 2018 is $35,854.00 - $46,609.00 (does not include locality pay)*

To qualify for the GS 9

You must either Have completed a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.


Have two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master’s degree or L.L.B. or JD in one of the desired fields.


Have completed a master's degree outside of one of the desired fields of study AND have at least one year of entry-level work experience in a field related to one of the desired skill sets listed above. Your entry-level work experience (equivalent to the Grade 7) must have included:

  • Working on a project or in a job where you had to collect information from various sources and make decisions based on requirements you were given
  • Demonstrating knowledge or research and analysis experience
  • Communicating orally and in writing

GS 9 Salary

The base salary for 2018 is $43,857.00 - $57,015.00 (does not include locality pay)*

*Final locality pay will be determined based on the location of your initial office assignment which you will receive during the fifth week of the Intelligence Analyst Basic Field Training in Quantico, VA.

IA Selection Process and Testing:  The IA Selection Process (IASP) consists of three phases of testing. Phase one consists of computer-based tests focused on analytical thinking, logical reasoning, personal experiences and phase two consist of a writing assessment. The third phase consist of a structured interview, which will assess your oral communication, interpersonal skills, ability to organize and plan, and your ability to think analytically.

Please note: Once you have passed any part of the IASP, you will not have to retake that portion should you fail a subsequent step.
