Job Description

Facebook is currently seeking innovative research interns with a passion for technology to develop next-generation head-mounted display, imaging and sensing systems at our research location in Redmond, WA. These roles are focused on the research and development of optical components and systems towards building advanced VR/AR systems. In particular, we welcome PhD students in optical science or engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or similar.

Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.


* Explore the tradespace for enabling prescription correction in VR.

The position will have an emphasis on the development of advanced simulations and prototyping to prove new concepts and the perceptual impact of those concepts.

Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team and provide creative leadership on display and imaging technologies.

The type of work should be publishable research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences.


* Pursuing a PhD degree in the field of Optical Science or Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

2+ years experience in geometric optics, some polarization and some mechanical deformation of optical components, emphasizing modeling and hardware prototyping.

3+ years experience with experimental optics and conducting laboratory work (i.e., demonstrated ability to construct proof-of-concept systems and to evaluate performance).

2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Mathematica, or similar.

2+ years experience with optical design programs such as Code V, Zemax, Lighttools, FRED, or similar.

Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.

Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.


* Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.

Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects.

Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications.
