Careers at Oculus

Part of Facebook

Oculus is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative researchers with a passion for technology to develop next-generation head-mounted display and imaging systems at our research location in Redmond, WA. This role is focused on developing optics and related technologies to advance both virtual and augmented reality systems. This position is for a full-time Optical Scientist role and requires a PhD in optical sciences, physics, electrical engineering, or similar, and a strong background in delivering optical display and imaging prototypes.

* Develop next-generation VR/AR head-mounted display and imaging prototypes

* Research both conventional and computational optics designs for virtual and augmented reality

* Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team and provide creativity to solve key challenges in display and imaging technologies

* Mentor MS/PhD interns and collaborate with internal teams and external academic groups to advance our research goals

* Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualifications

* Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Optical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline

* Knowledge of optics including imaging, illumination, radiometry and photometry, physical and geometric optics, statistics, and polarization.

* 3+ years experience with one or more optical design tools such as Zemax, Code V, FRED, LightTools, or ASAP

* 3+ years experience in solving problems in display and/or imaging systems, emphasizing hardware prototyping, experimental optics, and conducting laboratory work

* 2+ years experience with optical metrology and laboratory analysis tools such as interferometry and image quality testing

* 2+ years experience in development of prototype automation using LabVIEW, MATLAB, Mathematica or another program which enables custom analysis and automation of complex prototypes.

* Demonstrated capability for modeling and simulation of next-generation optics and displays

* Proven track record of achieving results, including first-authored journal publications, grants, fellowships, and patents

* Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

* Able to obtain work authorization in the US beginning in 2018

* Must be available to start employment on or after January 1, 2018

Preferred Qualifications

* Specialized understanding of illumination sources (lasers and LEDs), display technologies (LCD, OLED, and LCoS), spatial light modulators, diffractive optics, optical materials, and thin films

* Knowledge and experience with color science, colorimetry, and visual optics

* Experience with designing imaging optics, particularly featuring ultra-compact architectures, off-axis configurations, high magnification, large étendue, using both off-the-shelf and custom elements

* Experience with digital holography systems (e.g. coherent light source selection and optimization, CGH algorithms, spatial light modulators, system integration)

* Experience with analog holography (e.g. holographic optical element fabrication)

* Foundation in hardware rapid prototyping (e.g., 3D printing, mechanical design, bench prototyping, electronics, and software system integration)

* Experienced with advanced optical modeling (e.g. coupled wave theory)
