PRIMARY FOCUS

The primary focus of this position will be responsible for analyzing, assessing, modeling, monitoring and reporting the market risk for one or multiple trading/marketing business units. Incumbent’s expertise in risk modeling, natural gas markets, derivative analysis is relied upon to advise US Risk Control. This requires exercising judgement in decision making and bringing expertise in problem solving of complex risk management and accounting topics impacting internal and external financial reporting.

 

Under direction of the Manager, Risk Control US, the incumbent will also enhance business unit’s risk management oversight, policies, development, compliance and reporting. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively manage risk control reporting activities for the above business units in a primary or backup capacity. Provide coverage on other US business units risk reporting and accountabilities as required.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the risk system of record (Endur), transaction modeling, commodity markets related to business units, Var, EaR, and the Risk Management Policies.
  • Develop IT solutions, in conjunction with IT or independently, to enhance risk reporting, including advanced derivative modeling, transportation modeling, storage modeling.
  • Compile, summarize, and analyze reports relating to profit/loss, portfolio, transaction and market risks and trends which may require structured projects with cross functional impacts.
  • Identify process improvement challenges around current reporting, analysis, controls and propose solutions. Incumbent is required to look past the symptoms and determine the underlying causes of the issues.
  • Responsible for applying appropriate knowledge, information, and expertise to lead or co-lead, as required, projects that resolve challenges identified in performance of the above bullet or stipulated by management.
  • Ensure integrity, validity and accuracy of the monthly financial reporting process for business units through review, reconciliation and financial variance analysis of commercial transactions
  • Manage audit engagement requests to ensure SOX compliance with all requirements.
  • Identify and quantify demand charge obligations for each business unit as required. Assist/lead with management to develop business solutions to quantify such obligations.
  • Oversee the execution of commodity risk policies, overall Business Unit and Corporate strategies within the US business units. The incumbent is an advocate of Risk Controls Policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with the Risk Assessment team to ensure accurate and meaningful risk assessment for structured transactions and Risk Control valuation.
  • Develop and direct proactive solutions through both formal/informal projects and daily process activities.
  • Coordinate reconciliations against reporting output from Openlink and various other financial applications within the business units identifying reconciling items and proposing business solutions.
  • Serve as the liaison with commercial marketing, structuring, risk accounting, commodity accounting, IT, and organizational personnel to further the goals and objectives of Risk Control.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of Ten (10) years Energy industry experience.
  • Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related business degree is required.
  • Understanding of and the ability to apply the concepts pursuant to commodity price risk management: MtM, VaR, commodity exposures, volatility and correlation, other concepts as used in energy markets.
  • Comprehensive experience in the natural gas industry, with focus on ongoing process improvements in commodities risk management and reporting.
  • Competency in modeling or manipulating data in spreadsheets and databases, particularly in Microsoft products and Openlink Endur are essential. Experience with Visual Basic and macro programming will be an advantage.
  • Extensive understanding of derivative instruments and physical commodities marketing.
  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment in evaluation of alternatives and decision making process.
  • Ability to maintain objectivity and independence in evaluating transactions and commodity exposures.
  • Extensive understanding of trading concepts and trading/process operations relating to front to back deal flow.
  • Ability to generate successful working relationships at multiple levels and maintain them during stressful situations.
  • Possess strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Proactively manage, organize and take ownership of activities to achieve deadlines to make a meaningful impact
  • Ability to work with details and high level concepts.
  • Ability to fluidly adapt to evolving priorities and deadlines
