Job Description

While research shows that classroom teachers are the single most important in-school factor in improving student achievement, their diverse voices are consistently left out of education policy decisions. For far too long, teachers have been treated as subjects of change rather than as agents of change. Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence is a growing movement of over 35,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. We work together to identify issues that impact our schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to a quality education. What We Do Our Theory of Change is grounded in two long-term goals that are inextricably linked: better outcomes for our students and the elevation of the quality and prestige of the teaching profession. We achieve this by: * Building a movement of forward-thinking teachers through grassroots organizing in communities across the country * Identifying and training teacher leaders within that broader movement to take on key positions of influence in their schools, districts, states, and perhaps most importantly, within their teachers unions * Creating teacher-led policy recommendations in order to bridge the divide between policymakers and the classroom * Advocating for implementation of teacher-generated policy ideas * Scaling this model to reach critical mass in the communities we serve and across the country Educators for Excellence envisions an equitable and excellent education system that provides all students the opportunity to succeed and elevates the teaching profession. The Opportunity E4E has realized a number of critical achievements over the past several years, including rapid growth in staff, budget, and impact, and now stands poised to accelerate its progress over the coming three years. As we move forward, we will focus on deepening teacher engagement, developing the vision and tools for transformative teacher leadership, and bringing internal systems to the next level to ensure the organization has the infrastructure, resources, and supports necessary to achieve our goals. As part of this work, E4E is investing in its development function by hiring a Director of Development Operations & Strategy (DDOS) for our National Development Team. Reporting directly to the VP of Growth Strategy & Development (VPGSD), the DDOS will oversee work with our senior leadership and development staff members to set vision and direction for fundraising at E4E--including the development and execution of both long-term and annual fundraising strategy--as well as oversee efforts to build out and streamline our development infrastructure and enhance inter- and intra-team communication and resource-sharing. E4E is entirely philanthropically funded and supports our operations by building authentic and long-lasting partnerships with many of the country's preeminent education funders; this strategy generates ~$15MM annually from hundreds of national and local partners and has allowed us to expand our footprint to six communities nationwide. Currently a team of 7.5 FTEs (with dotted lines to 8 additional FTEs engaged in local fundraising activities in our six chapters), E4E's National Development Team is seeking to add dedicated, leadership-level capacity for vision-setting, planning, and execution of enterprise-wide strategies that will help us diversify and de-risk our revenue streams while building a best-in-class development function that is positioned to meet the long-term revenue needs of the growing organization. The new DDOS will be a seasoned development leader; an entrepreneurial systems-thinker; and a detail- and data-oriented project manager with an orientation toward thoughtful change management within a matrixed organization. You Will: Strategically Plan and Analyze: * Create a comprehensive, multi-year, enterprise-wide fundraising plan with a focus on funding sustainability and diversification. * Develop and support implementation of high-level annual fundraising strategy with a focus on ambitiously increasing the size, type, and number of gifts; * Work in partnership with local and national development staff members to set vision and direction for fundraising at E4E; * Lead on creation of development-specific materials and communications; and * Lead on planning and execution of meetings with the Board of Directors, and on board-building and engagement efforts. Build and Implement Systems: * Create systems to codify information, improve workflows and address pain points, and share best practices across national and local development teams; * Support internal engagement and communication across and within national and local teams; * Oversee team-wide learning and development agenda, including conceiving and planning for annual team retreat and developing and executing ongoing professional learning activities such as trainings, mentorship, and stretch projects; * Manage annual team goal-setting and impact-planning process, as well as develop, enhance, and maintain systems for reporting progress towards goals (and related metrics) to internal and external stakeholders; * Collaborate across senior leadership team and national and local development teams to codify and refine organization-wide fundraising policies and practices, such as gift acceptance policy; team and individual fundraising incentives; diversity, equity, and inclusion practices; donor messaging platform; and local-national decision-making framework; and * Oversee continued rollout and maintenance of Salesforce for pipeline tracking, donor communications, and moves management. Build Relationships and Coach and Develop Staff: * Build strong relationships across and within chapters and national streams to create a strong, single fundraising team that simultaneously supports organization-wide and local efforts while also building a culture of philanthropy across the wider organization; * Coach and support senior leadership and development staff in the creation of cultivation plans, the analyzing of data and trends, the identification of new donors, and the execution of fundraising activities; * Liaise with the Office of the Co-CEOs on special projects and initiatives on a consistent basis in order to ensure prioritization of the most critical projects that drive the organization to achieve its short and long-term goals; * Manage the National Development Associate, ensuring excellent execution of and customer service around activities such as cash collection, pipeline management, and data tracking and reporting; and * All E4E development staff members are expected to be able to: 1) speak on E4E's mission, programs, and impact with comfort, knowledge, and passion, and 2) engage with E4E prospects, donors, members, and other stakeholders as needed at events, site visits, and meetings. You Are: * A seasoned development leader, with: * 8 to 10 years of fundraising experience at increasing levels of responsibility, including in roles focused on direct and lateral management and advising of senior leaders; and * at least four years of direct fundraising experience managing portfolios, including experience grant writing for a foundation audience; * A thinker, planner, and doer-you want to create the strategy and then roll up your sleeves to execute it-and an exceptional project manager with experience leading complex strategic projects; * A natural relationship builder who is comfortable collaborating with internal and external stakeholders at all levels; * Fundamentally mission-driven, with a clear and demonstrated passion for educational change (and an interest in getting others excited about E4E's vision for creating transformational change from within the education system); * A next-level communicator adept at influencing others through a variety of communications mediums; * Able to demonstrate a high sense of urgency and self-motivation, a focus on goals, and commitment to high-quality execution; * Comfortable with traveling to various E4E chapters during the year, on an as needed basis (estimated <10% of="" time);=""> * Professionally aligned to our work, with at least one year of professional experience in the political/advocacy fundraising sector or education nonprofit sector, including K-12/higher education; school-based professional experience, or student-based professional experience.
