As Economist and analyst within a DOT Operating Administration (OA) or DOT headquarters (HQ), you will be responsible for conducting and managing economic and financial analyses required for the assigned studies and research projects.

You will serve as an economic expert representing the agency on Federal, and interagency task forces, collaborating with other DOT economists and providing advice and technical assistance for project planning and analysis.

As an Economist, you will:

* Participate on project teams by gathering and analyzing data using a variety of specified analytical techniques including literature reviews. Conduct economic research, analyzes and interprets economic data, develop estimates of benefits and report the results of findings under the guidance of a senior Economist.

* Conduct surveys to obtain economic data, relate previously submitted data to current conditions, and determine the relations of pertinent economic factors for well-defined projects.
* Participate in planning and scheduling activities with program manager's guidance; execute tasks as planned; monitor progress, resolve basic problems and keep program manager informed of project status.
* Communicate and present economic concepts and quantitative data, orally and in writing, especially to non-technical audiences and work collaboratively with other economists and with senior level executives.
* Serve on interdisciplinary teams as a member.

The ideal candidate for this position should have experience in collecting and analyzing economic information to determine the feasibility and cost effectiveness of agency transportation and related projects and the use of spreadsheets and software packages.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND (3) meet the specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the GS-09 on Experience, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-07, it must include:

* Experience in collecting and analyzing economic information to determine the feasibility and cost effectiveness of agency transportation and related projects and developing the plan and approach for economic studies including the use of software packages and spreadsheets; and/or the ability to write documentation for datasets or summarizing analytical results in support of a larger study.

To qualify for the GS-09 on Education alone, you must have:

* At least 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or have been awarded a master's or equivalent graduate degree. This must be fully supported by transcripts, that you provide with your application.
* You can also qualify based on a combination of graduate education and experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Students enrolled in a qualifying degree program can apply if the anticipated graduation date is within six months of the application date. Graduation transcript must be received before start date.

In order to qualify for this series, you must meet the following:

You must have completed a full 4-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher Degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.


Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in economics, as indicated above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
