Job Description

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to assist the Plant Maintenance Superintendent in supervising the maintenance, repair and alteration of water/wastewater facilities and equipment. This involves assisting in maintaining the Water Processing Plant, three reservoirs, plus several remote locations such as the elevated tanks, booster pump stations, ground storage stations, and the raw water intake station.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.

Prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; under the direction of the Superintendent, consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.

Oversees the diagnosis, troubleshooting, repairs, and rebuild of various pumps and plant equipment; and supervises staff that uses volt meters, micrometers, air monitors, leak detectors, angle gauges, and appropriate personal protective equipment to achieve maintenance standards.

Designs, fabricates, and implements plumbing systems to reduce costs; tracks work orders for team assignments; records work orders, assigns tasks and time remaining to complete tasks; and verifies all work assignments are prioritized and the equipment and tools necessary for the assignment are available and in good working order.

Instructs the maintenance team on safe and efficient work methods to operate their tasks per DeKalb County standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering or completion of a training program in the mechanical/electrical trades or electronics; four years of water or wastewater treatment plant mechanic, mechanical repair or utility plant maintenance, or a related field; to include one year of lead or supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license; must obtain and maintain a Georgia Water Distribution Operator License or Wastewater Collection System Operator license within 2 years of employment.
