Job Description

A Government Affairs Regional Manager is responsible for state and local government affairs within the MidWest.

Day-to-Day Role:

  • Review and understand technical, legislative and regulatory information and summarize in writing or communicate verbally to audiences with vastly different backgrounds
  • Assist the sales force in explaining environmental and health issues related to Dart products
  • Lead Dart's advocacy in assigned state or city legislatures and other government offices such as the Mayor, Governor or local city council. This may include writing letters, emails, making phone calls and conducting presentations, and testifying at hearings.  May also involve directing grassroots efforts or leading multi-state lobbying activities through the management of local consultants
  • Represent Dart accurately and professionally at meetings with trade associations, customers and elected officials to advance interest of the plastics and paper packaging industry
  • Understand implications of potentially restrictive legislation/regulations for Dart and/or Dart customers and be innovative and creative in developing solutions and responses to such legislation
  • Develop strategies for company and industry to combat and deter adverse legislation/regulations
  • Provide support and information as needed to Plant Managers and their staffs as well as Dart sales force and Dart customers
  • Review and update environmental information and literature provided for the region as needed
  • Respond clearly and appropriately to customers, Dart sales force or employees, publics officials, NGOs, and government agencies on environmental or other issues that concern Dart
  • Contact elected officials representing Dart plants to introduce company (plant tour or official visit) and make presentations to various groups, as necessary
  • Provide testimony (written and oral) at legislative and regulatory meetings and hearings
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings (in person or teleconference) and provide update on current projects
  • Prepare and submit monthly activity summary to GAED Global Manager
  • Stay abreast of recycling activities and new packaging materials
  • Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with key state and local elected officials, trade associations and other key groups
  • Build and manage coalitions in order to help the company's goals

Core Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five (5) years of experience in government affairs
  • Direct experience lobbying at the state and/or local level required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary in order to persuade and influence decision making of individuals, groups, or work teams, and to explain difficult issues
  • Must be comfortable speaking in both small and large audiences, including communicating with high level government officials
  • Ability to develop professional relationships with elected officials, trade associations and like minded coalitions
  • Ability to effectively manage and execute multiple tasks, projects and priorities; a self starter
  • Ability to maintain composure when faced with stressful situations
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including the ability to create basic reports, documents, and presentations in MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint
  • Must be willing and able to live and work in the Midwest region of the United States
  • Ability to travel up to 75% domestically with occassional short notice
  • Ability to obtain and mantain a valid drivers license

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Political Science, International Relations, Public Affairs or Law
  • Strong working knowledge and relationships in the Midwest Region
  • Knowledge of the plastics and/or paper packaging industry
