Job Description

The HR Generalist will be performing generalist duties in different areas of HR including labour/employee relations, legislative compliance, wellness, labour planning, training and recruiting. Under the guidance of the Corp. HR Manager, incumbent will:


Day-to-Day Role:

1. Provide specialist support in Labour/Employee Relations and Collective Bargaining Agreement interpretations.

    •Assist and on occasion lead the grievance process
    •Participate in union-management meetings, mediation and arbitration
    •Coach management in (a) interpretation and action planning for issues covered by the collective agreement (b) conflict resolution, both for union and non-union employees (c) employee discipline and attendance management
    •Conduct investigations
    •Complete needed documentation (process/procedure/results) in a timely manner

2. Lead all HR-related compliance initiatives to ensure that the Company meets or exceeds legislative compliance (example – AODA, ESA, etc.) or internal HR requirements

    •Complete all government reports in relation to HR-related compliance
    •Keep abreast of legislative compliance and update executives/management 
    •Ensure that HR meets/exceeds best practice standards
    •Prepare required documentation 

3. Lead the Employee Wellness initiatives of the Company 

    •Research and recommend action plans (using best practice and other standards)
    •Establish data/statistics showing results of executed initiatives
    •Demonstrate continuous improvement in the rolled out initiatives

4. Lead the internal attendance management process

    •Ensure that attendance data is accurate and robust, and is shared with management for proper action
    •Guide supervisors/managers in the development of action plans
    •Review process and recommend ways to improve 
5. Participates in labour planning and produces corresponding documentation to execute the plan.

6. Participates in recruitment and selection activities to ensure that quality candidates fulfill the headcount requirements on time. 

7. Promotes and ensures consistency in application of policies and discipline through proper education and documentation.

8. Participates and supports HR performance improvement initiatives and other continuous improvement opportunities, including those pertaining to efficiency and cost.

9. Works closely with other members of the HR team and may sometimes work under the direction of other HR generalists for some tasks.


Other Duties and Responsibilities:
     1.    Assist in disability management.
     2.    Participate in project teams if necessary
     3.    Deliver training if necessary.
*Will perform other duties as assigned.


Core Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:

  • University degree or equivalent, with concentration in Human Resources preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of related experience.
  • High level of organization, with ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in order to meet deadlines.
  • Minimum of 2 yearrs Labour Relations experience
  • Knowledge of best practices in HR
  • Have strong values and a history of building trust and respect with employees and management
  • Will deliver results through ethical, effective, efficient and practical methods
  • Demonstrated track record in promoting an inclusive environment and seeking ways to integrate differences
  • Must be flexible in hours of work as support is provided for employees doing shift work
  • CHRL designation desired, or working towards
  • Proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel) and experience in SAP a strong asset
