Job Description

The Truck Driver is responsible for operating a tractor trailer inter/intrastate to pick-up and/or deliver product. Responsible for inspecting equipment before and after each operation as well as keeping daily logs and calculating the most efficient routes.

Day-to-Day Role:

  • Comply with Dart Container's policies and procedures.
  • Follow practices and processes intended to provide safe products that comply with appropriate laws and regulations that meet the company quality standards, and serve the needs of our customers. This includes commitment to a process of continuous improvement.
  • Drive a diesel/gas tractor in accordance with commercial driving regulations of the state, U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation) and ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission). May operator tractor overnight up to 500 miles within a 10 hour driving period.
  • Maneuver tractor in difficult situations, such as narrow passageways and within urban areas. Hook/unhook trailer as necessary and may be required to rest in “sleeper” tractor or motel.
  • Inspect equipment before and after each operation. Conduct a visual inspection of the tractor trailer to include such items as tires, brakes, fluid levels and latched before each operation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance checks and services of truck and trailer. Report any malfunction to Truck Maintenance Supervisor for correction.
  • Calculate most efficient routes of travel. Consult bill-of-ladings, denoting destinations and road maps to determine most direct and efficient routes of travel. Make route adjustments if necessary and contact supervision of customer/vendor by telephone/CB if encountering destination problems.
  • Maintain driver’s logs and other records, per state and federal standards. Complete driving logs, per regulations of states, DOT and ICC as necessary. Ensure possession of all appropriate documentation, including registration and vehicle reports.
  • Unload delivered product at warehouse and retail locations. Assist vendors in the loading of product. Unload trailer of specified merchandise per bill-of-ladings at the specified destination. Move cartons of merchandise by hand or fork-truck and reposition merchandise to ensure against breakage. Utilize hand dolly, hand jack or rollers when moving merchandise to/from a trailer.
  • Fuel truck.
  • Assure compliance with all safety, quality, and Good Manufacturing Practice requirements.
  • Perform other duties within the employee’s training and skills as directed by the supervisor and/or manager.

Core Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:

  • Demonstration of minimum proficiency with the English language in order to ensure effective new hire training and on-going communications about safety and quality issues.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Ability to work weekends as needed.
  • Two (2) year Class A CDL license required.
  • Must pass DOT physical.
  • Good driving record for five (5) years required.
  • Two (2) years previous OTR tractor trailer driving experience.
