Darien Public Schools Accountant

Qualifications: The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics and three years of progressively responsible accounting experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: A working knowledge of accounting principles, methods and practices and ability to apply and adapt established methods to varied financial transactions. Experience with General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Purchasing, and Bank Reconciliation. Willingness to learn and back up Accounts Payable & Payroll if needed. Proficiency in departmental computer applications, including MUNIS, School Cash Online, State Department of Education interfacing applications, and Excel preferred. Candidates possessing strong proficiency with Excel in combination with other Accounting software and accounting experience will be considered. Ability to maintain effective working relationships and a positive demeanor with District and School Personnel and work independently as well as in a team environment.

Examples of Duties: 

• Prepares, issues and posts all receivables. Monitors aging and works with departmental personnel as well as payees to ensure timely processing. 

• Monitors cash balances and use of funds. Prepares bank reconciliations and reviews with departmental management. 

• Provides regular and timely monitoring of fiscal activity and balances for accuracy of accounting records, budgetary availability and compliance with policy and regulations. 

• Reviews requests for, prepares, posts and keeps records of financial transactions, such as journal entries and budget transfers. Ensures that such transactions are appropriate and have available balances. 

• Prepares and reviews regular financial reports and statements, reimbursement requests. 

• Works cooperatively with the Town to attain full and timely recording of deposits. 

• Manages records retention activities of financial records/transactions. 

• Schedules and coordinates internal review, including Student Activity and other funds 

• Prepares Monthly Reporting to the CT State Teachers’ Retirement Board 

• Keeps current with developments in his/her profession and offers solutions to promptly and properly respond to changes. 

• Supports annual audit. 

• Assists with the administration of payroll, insurance and benefits programs. 

• Assists internal customers and external constituencies with needs that cannot be satisfied by other Finance staff members. 

• Takes initiative in solving problems and modifying processes to improve efficiency and control. 

• Back up for payroll and accounts payable processing 

• Performs general accounting functions 

• Maintain expected levels of confidentiality consistent with Board policies and the position 

• Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance and Operations/Assistant Director of Finance

Physical, Mental Exertion/Environmental Conditions: Performs duties in an office environment. May be required to lift and move light to medium weights (up to 15 pounds), for example, office supplies, etc. Uses repetitive motions in operating office equipment, including keyboards, calculators, check signers, fax machines, scanners and copiers. Must be able to hear clearly (correctable to within normal limits) to record telephone information, and to see to complete applications and forms. Adaptive technology may be used. Must be able to work well in a collegial environment. 

Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000
