Job Description:

Under the direction of the Director of the Counseling Center, the Staff Counselor is a full-time generalist position in the Counseling Center. This position provides clinical services to support the psychological well-being of students at the College. The Staff Counselor must work within their scope of clinical training, experience and ethical standards of professional practice. In addition, the Staff Counselor assists in the overall operation of the department, outreach and other duties as assigned. This is a full-time, 12-month position. The work schedule is Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 am -4:30 pm, and Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Essential Functions:

Direct Care/Counseling & Clinical Services:

* Provides evaluation and recommendations for frequency, modality and intensity of treatment services to promote student mental health.
* Provides counseling and psychotherapy for students (predominantly short term), individually, couples or in group modalities of treatment as clinically appropriate.
* Maintains a clinical caseload as assigned by the Director, in concert with the Department's needs and scope of practice.
* Provides crisis intervention services in concert with Counseling Center policies and procedures.
* Makes appropriate referrals to community service providers, for specialized evaluation, medication, neuro-psychological testing and/or more intensive counseling services when clinically indicated (e.g., partial hospital, inpatient psychiatric care).
* Maintains client confidentiality per department policies and procedures.
* May work some evenings or a staggered schedule to facilitate Center staffing coverage.
* Participates in clinical on-call rotation for Counseling Center.


* Provides consultation to students, parents, faculty and staff on topics within his/her professional scope of training and expertise.
* Consults with health care and treatment providers, when service needs are outside of the Staff Counselor's scope of training and expertise.
* Consults with collateral providers as a means of enhancing clinical services, determining appropriateness of services, and to involve other providers when clinically indicated.
* Consults with the Director in a timely fashion about clinical activities and needs, including high-risk situations to help promote student mental health and safety.
* Participates in assigned departmental rotation of after-hours clinical on-call consultation to campus partners when the Counseling Center is closed.
* Participates in departmental triage/crisis appointment rotation during regular business hours to evaluate student mental health needs.

Educational Outreach:

* Provides prevention and response oriented education about sexual and violence related misconduct, gender based and intimate partner violence.
* Collaborate with the College's Title IX Coordinator and other relevant campus stakeholders on prevention based programming and act as a liaison for referrals for intervention and campus requests for outreach pertaining to sexual assault prevent and response and other wellness related topics.
* Create ongoing educational programs on campus to address the causes, situations, and behaviors associated with sexual assault, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence and other non-consensual behaviors, as well as education on bystander intervention.
* Provides informational sessions to students, student groups and classes about available services and relevant mental health topics as assigned.
* Plans and participates in psycho-educational outreach activities to the student community.
* Participates in and/or creates training modules for campus partners as assigned by the Director (e.g., training for Resident Assistants about assisting students in crisis).
* Participates in outreach events as assigned (e.g., Orientation, campus open houses).
* Outreach activities may require some evening and weekends on campus, as assigned.

Record Keeping/Clinical Documentation:

* Keeps client records as required by departmental procedures and professional standards.
* Maintains daily schedule and client records in EMR or designated documentation system(s).
* Enters data associated with departmental activities in a timely fashion to facilitate departmental statistical records (e.g., for reporting purposes).

Supervision & Training:

* Receives and participates in regular clinical supervision from the Director during which case assignments, treatment progress and student mental health needs are reviewed to ensure service delivery is consistent with the scope of practice within the Department.
* Regarding clinical intern trainees, the Staff Counselor assists the Director with clinical training, supervision and/or training materials, as assigned.
* Provides evaluation of intern trainees as assigned.
* Supervises trainees on individual cases, outreach and training activities at the Counseling Center, as assigned.
* Provides clinical consultation and clinical back-up as assigned.

Administrative Support & Professional Standards:

* Participates in committees as assigned.
* Provides informational and/or relevant statistical reports.
* Provides research and clinical training material as assigned.
* Maintains professional knowledge by attending appropriate clinical in-service trainings in the field of college mental health.
* Maintains ethical and professional standards of clinical work in the mental health profession (e.g., in accordance with departmental ethics/policies and training disciplines, such as American Psychological Association, National Association of Social Workers).
* Maintains state licensure by attending relevant continuing education programs/workshops.

Additional Functions:

* Committee membership as assigned by the Director.
* Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or his/her designee.
* Maintains confidentiality per departmental policies and procedures.


Minimum Qualifications:

* A minimum of a Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work or a related field.
* Must have at least three years of college mental health experience (post-graduate) or other relevant clinical experience.
* Must be licensed or license eligible in MA. Licensure must be obtained within one year of employment.
* Must be capable of using a computer for daily clinical documentation and scheduling purposes.
* Solid team player with good communication skills. Ability to build collegial relationships with campus and community partners to facilitate service delivery.
* Ability to keep up with the fast pace of the Center and maintain timely clinical documentation.
* Ability and flexibility to individualize evaluation and treatment needs of students at the College.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Doctoral level clinician preferred.
* Has prior knowledge of HIPAA standards.
* Multicultural competence.
* Has prior knowledge of learning disabilities.

At the College's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the college, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
