Job Summary:

* The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer is expected to be an expert within their subject will be responsible, and accountable, for design aspects from preliminary, critical and final designs. They will be key contributors to the overall mechanical and electro-mechanical functions of equipment, as well as support to other areas of the business, such as prototyping, manufacture, field service and installation. They will have authority, at appropriate levels, to conduct and approve engineering works on behalf of the Design team, including technical sign off and delivery to customer requirements and customer facing design reviews.

The design team is expected to work across disciplines of Mechanical and Electrical teams, as well as consider theoretical and analytical approaches to problem solving. Writing sub-system Requirements and the management of them forms part of the role.



Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

* To successfully design, draw and document the mechanical engineering aspects of company products to industry standards, as well as to project requirements.
* Requirements management, as well as the leading of high value project pieces of work involving other team members and non-engineers within the company.
* Contribute, through experience and engineering judgement, to the creation and delivery of product solutions, as well as project plans and estimating. This will involve both cost and time estimating for large and complex packages of work, often across disciplines.
* Direct involvement in evaluation of testing and report writing.
* To capture Engineering sub-system requirements and identify suitable validation techniques
* Take ownership of the Mechanical Engineering project plans and updates, being accountable for the development and delivery to project and product demands.
* Assume the role of Engineering Team Lead for specific projects, as requested.
* Supervise and monitor both electrical and mechanical Engineers as necessary and take full technical responsibility for designs produced by supervised engineers.
* Plan development of resources and assist in recruitment of staff as and when required.
* Responsibility for Mechanical Design Engineering to fulfil customer or development requirements, through design, component specification, prototype, testing and full documentation stages.
* Provide technical assistance and advice to Management during bids and proposals.
* Produce detailed estimates of design content of proposals and assist in the compiling of manufacturing cost estimates.
* To assess the validity of the various design and manufacturing proposals - for maximum cost effectiveness on the particular project.
* To prepare Systems and Engineering specifications to obtain quotations from sub-contractors and material suppliers.
* Assist with the preparation of presentations and proposals to customers.
* Liaise with and report to Management on performance to timescales and budgets on specific projects.
* Liaise with, and co-ordinate the work of sub-contractors and suppliers where required.
* Liaise with all Production, Engineering and QA staff on Mechanical Engineering matters, including assistance if requested.
* Travel to customer's site to perform or supervise commissioning and acceptance tests. Also to provide after sales technical support on site or supervise such activities as requested.
* Ensure good communications both verbal and written are maintained with Management with regular reporting of problems and resources required to meet planned objectives
* To liaise with all production, engineering and QA staff on mechanical engineering matters
* Keep up to date on the latest Engineering techniques, materials and manufacturing methods.
* Communication at all levels of the organization

* In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the jobholder is required to perform other duties assigned by the supervisor/manager from time to time, as may be reasonably required of them
* Assumes additional technical responsibilities as needed. Serves as team lead and assumes additional technical and leadership responsibilities as needed to solve engineering problems or develop improved engineering processes.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Four-year college degree in mechanical engineering or science discipline plus a minimum of 12 years of experience or a Master's degree with 10 years of experience. Experience to include hardware development/engineering and exercising creativity in technical directions and successful strategy development. Ability to interpret technical contract requirement. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, interface with customer, subcontractors and vendors, and deal with employees and managers at all levels in manufacturing, engineering and other departments.

* Experience in a senior/supervisory role of a team of 5+ engineers.
* 3D Solid modelling and drawing experience in SolidWorks. Other CAD experience will be considered.
* 3D cabling, advanced modelling or surfacing experience in SolidWorks.
* Surface modelling and advanced assemblies knowledge.
* Working knowledge of project management roles, such as budget and time management.
* Previous responsibility for budgets and engineering bids
* Experience with EPDM or similar PLM software
* MS Office
* Experience of designing castings, sheet metalwork, moldings, electronic harnesses and electro-mechanical module design.
* Experience of testing and evaluating prototypes, approving designs and first article inspection.
* Technical writing experience, particularly with regard to test / product specifications.
* Extensive experience in a Mechanical Design environment.
* Previous experience of producing component, wiring and schematic diagram drawings.
* Be able to work well as part of a team of engineers of all experience levels, as well as work independently and with minimal or no supervision if required.
* Ensures understanding of the market, competitor activity and issues affecting the development of the business. Thinks laterally about new opportunities for business improvement

* Have a high attention to detail and high design standards for product delivery
* Maintains high level of knowledge of own field and proactively keeps up to date with changes.
* Ability to communicate at all levels, recognizing and meeting the technical and non technical knowledge of the audience.
