Starting salary up to $21.67/hour!
Plus, an additional $1.15/hour bilingual premium

Please Note: If you are interested in being considered for Community Health Worker II - Bilingual (Spanish/English) Extra-Help, you will need to apply to the separate, concurrent recruitment being conducted for that level. 

Basic conversational Spanish is required for this extra-help position. Applicants who do not indicate they possess this skill will not be considered for this recruitment. An examination will be conducted prior to employment to confirm skill level. The bilingual premium pay begins upon the assignment of bilingual work. 

Reporting to the Supervising Nutritionist overseeing the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program, Community Health Workers provides direct service to WIC participants by screening for eligibility, distributing WIC food benefits, and providing basic health and referral information. They work as part of a team within the WIC Program, maintaining a high level of customer service contact with individual WIC participants by phone, in groups, and one-on-one settings. Exercising tact, confidentiality and courtesy in conducting business with the public and other employees, Community Health Workers communicate with community agencies, health care providers, and other public health staff regarding WIC participants. Their duties also include greeting and welcoming participants, creating and maintaining participant computer records, determining income and residence eligibility, measuring and weighing participants, performing day-to-day administrative functions and general office duties.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • The ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and communication skills, and proficient computer skills necessary to navigate program specific software
This employment list may also be used to fill future extra-help positions as they occur during the active status of this list.

Extra Help Positions

Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

Minimum Qualifications


Education and Experience: Any combination of education and work experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed herein.  Normally, this would include, the ability to read and write English and perform basic arithmetic calculations at a level required for successful job performance, and recent experience, either paid or unpaid which has provided personal first-hand knowledge of the problems, needs, attitudes, and behavior patterns of the community as they relate to public health. 

Special Requirement: Designated positions may require the ability to speak and write a language in addition to English.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Knowledge of: The needs, problems, attitudes, and behavior patterns of at risk persons and of the community as a whole; community health programs; office practices and procedures including filing, record keeping, and use of a computer; operation of office equipment.

Ability to: communicate with residents of the underserved and at risk communities and with representatives of public and private agencies providing community health-related services; read and write English; learn use of elementary medical terminology, as needed; assist with presentation of elementary public health educational programs; learn to provide information on various health maintenance concepts, and to obtain health and social information by interviewing clients; assist with community relations tasks; learn to operate computerized audio-visual equipment and set up for media presentations; write simple reports and keep records; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively with the public; work well with others; function as a team member, and benefit from supervision and training.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

A background investigation is required prior to employment.  Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation.  Failure to sign prescribed forms will result in the candidate not being considered further for that vacancy.  Reference information will not be made available to applicants.
