Job Description


Sonoma County Regional Parks is seeking a dynamic and experienced communications professional with a strong background in digital marketing and project management skills.

Starting salary up to $35.21/hour ($73,487/year) plus a cash allowance of approximately $600/month*

The Marketing Specialist helps implement the Regional Parks' communications program and promotes the public's understanding of park operations, park planning, natural resources, outdoor recreation, environmental education, and park membership. This position plays a lead role in online engagement and community visibility, as well as internal communications, marketing, and branding. Responsibilities will include:

  • Creating, posting, and evaluating social media content and maintaining a social media editorial calendar
  • Writing and editing newsletters, website content, blog posts, recreation guides, and other user content
  • Coordinating media relations by identifying news opportunities, writing and disseminating news releases, pitching stories and coordinating interviews
  • Developing written and visual presentations for Regional Parks' staff
  • Conducting research and developing marketing content through regular visits to parks, interviews with subject matter experts, and interpretation of technical reports
  • Taking photographs and/or producing videos, and/or coordinating photography by outside contractors
  • Promoting and attending special events such as festivals and recreational outings
  • Collaborating with external partners to promote joint projects
  • Coordinating all aspects of assigned marketing communications projects

The ideal candidate is a highly organized team player who can work well in a deadline-driven environment and possesses:

  • A passion to preserve, protect, and provide access to Sonoma County's parks
  • Significant experience with professional communications, journalism, marketing, or public relations
  • Experience developing and implementing digital and print communications campaigns
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills, including journalistic writing
  • Knowledge of local government and regional media, including Spanish-language media
  • The ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines

Minimum Qualifications


Any combination of education and/or experience that would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed.

Education and Experience: Normally, a Baccalaureate degree with emphasis in public administration, communications, journalism, public information, education, marketing or closely related field AND two years of full-time experience in marketing, public relations, or event management activities. License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Knowledge of: the principles, techniques and methods of promotions, marketing, advertising, media relationships, events planning, and coordination; procedures and practices relative to booking and scheduling events of both a community and commercial nature; principles of graphic design and production; techniques and methods of researching and preparing news releases, marketing plans, reports, and informational materials; fundamentals of public speaking; software applications used for desk-top publishing, data collections and word processing; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; use of automated equipment, cameras and other related media preparation equipment; basic statistics and their application in analysis; modern office methods and procedures.

Ability to: plan, develop, organize, and implement mass communications; coordinate and staff trade shows booths at promotional events; coordinate public events; communicate orally and in writing in a clear, concise and effective manner; write and edit materials for publication; compile concise reports, letters, newsletters and other written materials; speak effectively and persuasively before diverse groups; work cooperatively with public community groups, members of the media and departmental staff; work with software applications used in event booking and website design; and use electronic information equipment and specific systems utilized by the department.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:
An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
  • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.
