Job Description

The Position

This is a continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on:

1/3/19, 1/17/19, 4/5/19, 7/5/19, 10/4/19

A Public Health Microbiologist performs professional laboratory work for bacteriological, serological, parasitological, virological and mycological analysis of environmental samples, human and animal specimens for the detection and identification of infectious diseases.

Note: Vacancies may be permanent or intermittent on-call.

Knowledge of

* Principles, techniques, equipment and terminology used in a laboratory for making bacteriological, serological, mycological, virological, parasitological and chemical tests
* Laboratory hazards and proper safety precautions and procedures
* Quality control procedures
* Current trends and developments in public health microbiology
* Common causes and modes of transmission of infectious diseases
* Basic laws and regulations that apply to public health laboratories

Ability to

* Perform with speed and accuracy laboratory diagnostic tests and examinations, and interpret test results

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid Public Health Microbiologist Certificate issued by the California State Department of Health.

Note: A copy of a valid Public Health Microbiologist Certificate issued by the California State Department of Health MUST be submitted with the application. Failure to submit proof of valid certificate will result in disqualification from the examination.

Special Requirements

* Incumbents must be willing to work with infectious materials
* Persons considered for employment must not be at increased risk of acquiring infection or for whom infection may be unusually hazardous

Probationary Period

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.

This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.

All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, training and experience likely to provide the required Knowledge and Abilities for this class as described above. Typically this includes but is not limited to:

Either: 1. A bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university,

Or: 2. Completion of eighteen upper division semester units in an accounting curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university, and current employment with and six months of experience in Sacramento County service as a Student Intern or related classes (related classes typically are Accounting Technician or Account Clerk).


Note:
1. Experience may be paid or unpaid.

2. Semester units are converted to quarter units on the basis of six semester units equal nine-quarter units.

3. An accredited college or university includes accredited business or correspondence schools; coursework at such schools is converted to semester units on the basis that one semester unit equals 15 hours of instruction.

4. The minimum qualification of 18 upper division semester units in an accounting curriculum for the Auditor (Level I) mustinclude 12 upper division semester units in the following areas:

  • Intermediate Accounting(accounting and its application to the valuation and presentation of assets, liabilities, net worth, income and expense accounts, application of GAAP).
  • Cost Accounting (cost accounting standards; accounting reports for management decision-making purposes; managerial analysis for budgeting, standard costs, cost allocation, cost estimation, transfer pricing, and cost data for quantitative models). 
  • Auditing (procedures and practices employed to verify the accuracy of business accounting records and financial statements; ascertainment of financial reliability of responsible parties; duties of independent auditors).

The remaining 6 upper division semester units should be from the following:
