Job Description

Located on a wooded campus overlooking the Cleveland Metroparks, the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph has an opening for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to provide hands-on care to the sisters residing or convalescing in our St. Joseph Hall. The LPN performs assigned nursing procedures for the comfort and the well-being of the sisters. The LPN supervises and assists the sisters with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, dressing, personal care services etc. to ensure their health and well-being. The LPN supervises and administers medications and provides a wide variety of care functions within the limits of the LPN license and in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards and mandates. Works under the direction of the RN and/or Center Director of Health and Wellness.

Shift Available:

Friday, Saturday and Sunday 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Additional shifts may be available on a PRN basis.


  1. Assists in maintaining a safe environment for the sisters and staff by following established policies and procedures which promote wellness and are in accordance with federal OSHA regulations and the State of Ohio Board of Nursing requirements.

  2. Provides assistance to sisters and/or training with ADLs including medication management, dietary management, personal hygiene and other skills necessary for assisted living.

  3. Provides personal aspects of care to the sisters to increase the level of comfort and to maintain personal hygiene while assuring modesty and respect at all times.

  4. Records vital signs eg blood pressure, temperature, weight, etc.

  5. Assists in facilitating an environment of wellness, promoting maximum independence for each sister.

  6. Observes and administers medications in a safe, appropriate and timely manner.

  7. Coordinates with other service providers ie social workers, RNs, practitioners, etc. to ensure that necessary medical services are received by sisters.

  8. Administers necessary treatment following appropriate techniques.

  9. Monitors conditions and keeps aware of changes or unusual occurrences and informs the RN/Center Director of Health and Wellness of such changes or unusual occurrences.

  10. Documents care according to the State of Ohio professional nursing practices and organizational policies.

  11. Observes the care given by the nurse aides and assists as needed. Provides training to new nurse aides as requested. Supports the philosophy and policies of the Congregation and interprets to new staff as necessary.

  12. Supervises the staff in the absence of the RN/Center Director of Health and Wellness.

  13. Provides direct care ie assistance with showering, walking, incontinence care etc. when nurse aides are not present or available in accordance with all current federal, state, and local standards and mandates.

  14. Maintains detailed and accurate medical records.

  15. Keeps medication cart and containers neat, clean and adequately stocked.

  16. When needed, transports sisters to the chapel for services, the dining room for meals or to activities.

  17. Attends meetings as assigned.

  18. Participates in continuing education seminars and workshops as requested.

  19. Promotes and maintains a spirit of teamwork.

  20. Follows all applicable State of Ohio mandates and requirements in accordance to the LPN licensure.

  21. All other duties as assigned.


  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  2. Ability to comprehend and utilize professional education materials and willing to update required nursing skills.

  3. Must have a level of maturity and the ability to deal effectively with the demands of the job.

  4. Possesses the ability to maintain confidentiality.

  5. Must have a working knowledge of acceptable universal precautions.

  6. Is comfortable with death as a natural process.

  7. The ability to relate well with the elderly and to demonstrate an understanding of individual dignity and worth of residents and coworkers.

  8. The ability to recognize the needs and desires of others and is respectful and courteous to sisters and coworkers.

  9. To be flexible in changing daily routine in accordance with the sisters' schedules.

  10. Ability to communicate professionally and direct staff as required.

  11. Ability to approach people in a manner which creates harmony and promotes cooperation.

  12. Demonstrates knowledge of fire and safety plans and use of safety devices.

  13. Demonstrates knowledge of universal body substance isolation practices.


  1. Must have current State of Ohio licensure as an Licensed Practical Nurse free and clear of any and all violations.

  2. High school diploma or GED equivalent. Higher education is preferred.

  3. Proven experience in the field of nursing and/or gerontology.


  1. Ability to push/pull wheelchairs, geriatric chairs and other equipment.
  2. Must be able to stand for lengthy periods of time.
  3. Ability to transfer residents with assistance of another in an emergency situation.
  4. Must have the ability to bend, stoop, reach above shoulder level and lift up to 60 lbs. independently.
  5. Risk of exposure to disease, infection, physical strain, etc.
  6. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, chemical and respiratory hazards.
  7. Exposure to latex, plastic and/or materials which are used for personal protective equipment
