Position Summary

The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute is an interdisciplinary research institute at Columbia University focused on the mind and brain.

The BRAINYAC program (Brain Research Apprenticeships In New York At Columbia) is a mentored science research program for high school students run by the Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. The program aims to introduce high school students to the academic scientific research environment, improve their science technical skills, and increase their understanding of science.

The BRAINYAC program seeks two Program Intern who will assist in running the BRAINYAC program and other educational outreach initiatives. The Program Intern plays a vital role in achieving the Zuckerman Institute's education and outreach programmatic goals.


Reporting to the Associate Director of Public Programs, the Program Intern will:

* Coordinate and assist with running the BRAINYAC training sessions and related activities
* Serve as a resource for current BRAINYAC students
* Attend and participate in key BRAINYAC staff meetings
* Serve as a positive role model for BRAINYAC students
* Attend and participate in key BRAINYAC events such as the final poster presentation
* Participate in and complete all other duties as assigned

The Program Intern will work both independently and as part of a team with BRAINYAC program staff. The Intern will understand and abide by all Columbia University policies, including confidentiality and protection of minors policies.

The Program Intern will work between 10-20 hours per week depending on the specific tasks assigned. The Intern must be able to commit to working Saturday mornings during the spring, with additional hours scheduled flexibly during the week. This position will last approximately 4 months or no more than 560 hours (whichever comes first).

Minimum Qualifications

* At least two years of High School experience. Willing to learn and share information about Zuckerman Institute education and outreach programs initiatives. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated leadership potential with strong organizational skills. Must be self-motivated with a positive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

* BRAINYAC Alumnus preferred.
