The Office of the Dean oversees the mission of teaching, research, service and outreach in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The communications team supports that mission by providing web and external communication support for faculty, staff, and students in the college. The Office of the Dean serves as the main administrative office for the rest of the University. The office administers all financial, development, research administration, industry outreach activities, communication, facilities, human resources and travel functions conducted within the college.

Position Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences seeks a skilled communicator for the position of CVMBS writer and content creator. This position is part of a team fulfilling communication strategies for the college. Applicants should value building relationships within the team and across the college.

The position is responsible for researching, reporting, and writing stories and other written content about college teaching, research, outreach, and clinical service. The candidate must have a collaborative, creative mindset, and enjoy working within a team while possessing the independence to generate ideas and the initiative to follow through on projects. Applicants should be adept at interviewing subjects, and writing accurate, complete, clear, and compelling stories that are often complex and based on science, health, and medicine. The qualified candidates will be skilled in writing for a variety of media platforms, including news releases, newsletters, magazines, brochures, videos, web, and social media designed to reach a variety of audiences.

Required Job Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field.
* Minimum of one year of professional writing experience for print and online media demonstrated with news, feature, social media, and web-based writing samples.

Preferred Job Qualifications

* Self-starter with the ability to make informed, sound decisions reflecting college and university communications goals and strategies.
* Advanced written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to successfully communicate about science, animals, health, and medicine.
* Working knowledge of social media and writing for the web.
* Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects, both independently and as part of a team, and across college units.
* Strong research, writing, and editing skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines in a dynamic environment.
* Demonstrated ability to work as part of a communications team, with a strong work ethic and the desire and ability to initiate communications ideas and strategies.
* Experience working in higher education.
* Superior organizational and project management skills.
* Competence using Associated Press writing style as demonstrated by submitted writing samples.
* Experience creating videos and visual content for institutional and social media platforms.
* Fluency in Microsoft Office software suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
* Understanding of web content, user experience and search engine optimization.
* Familiarity with WordPress.
* Experience with creating content and distributing email newsletters.
* Event planning background.
