Job Description

We're hiring a full-time Assistant Controller to join our Nonprofit Outsourcing practice in our New York City, NY location.

As a key member of our NYC based Outsourcing team, the Assistant Controller provides high-level accounting services to CLA nonprofit clients in the Greater NYC Metro area. S/he is accountable for maintaining best practices and adding value through the consistent delivery of high-quality work to multiple clients. The Assistant Controller maintains a working knowledge of financial and operational aspects of the nonprofit sector and GAAP (FASB/SFAS) standards.

In a full-time role reporting directly to a CLA CFO, Controller and/or Outsourcing Principal, the Assistant Controller shows excellent technical ability and works closely with multiple CLA clients throughout the NYC metro area.

Primary Responsibilities

* Perform and manage designated accounting function in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy.
* Perform and/or oversee client accounting, grant tracking and cash flow activity.
* Perform month-end close and preparation of journal entries.
* Monitor cash flow; review and monitor costs inherent in the business; make recommendations as appropriate.
* Independently prepare financial statements in a timely manner consistent with CLA quality guidelines.
* Perform and/or oversee annual audit deliverables.
* Assist in preparation of annual budget.
* Perform paper and/or electronic record keeping to meet both client and CLA internal quality needs.
* Execute best practices and separation of duties at all times.
* Routinely identify efficiencies and areas of improvement in scope and process at all clients.

Technical Knowledge

* Solid knowledge of GAAP (FASB/SFAS) standards and deep understanding of financial and operational aspects of his/her specific industry.
* Proficient knowledge of government (state and federal) policies and directives impacting the nonprofit sector.
* Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of accounting software packages.
* Utilizes internal CPE learning opportunities to maintain up-to-date technical knowledge.

Organizational Role

* The Assistant Controller reports directly to a CLA CFO, Controller and/or Outsourcing Principal and typically spends 90% of time on multiple client assignments at client locations. S/he supervises accounting services staff which may include CLA accounting services staff, client accounting services staff, or both.

Qualifications

* Minimum of three to five years relative work experience in a Senior Staff Accountant or Assistant Controller role.
* Education: BA/BS degree in accounting or related field required.
* Experience working with multiple clients is preferred.
* Nonprofit accounting experience is preferred but not required.
* CPA preferred but not required.
* Proficiency and aptitude for applicable software (Microsoft Excel, Accounting Software, etc.).
* Willing to travel to client sites within the Greater NYC Metro Area (5 boroughs).
