Job Description

Distinguishing Features of Work Benefits Supplemental Questions

This is an exciting opportunity for an Accounting undergraduate or graduate student to get hands on governmental accounting experience and be part of our implementation team for our new ERP resource system (accounting, payroll and human resources). There are two accounting internships being offered. These internships will be one-year in length, pay $12-$14 per hour, work between 30 to 40 hours a week and work directly under the supervision of the Controller and Accountants/Senior Accountants in the Controller's Office.

We are seeking internship candidates who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate accounting program and have completed and passed the intermediate accounting courses. Recently graduated accounting students may also apply. The interns will be assisting the Controller's Office and some of the possible duties they will be performing are as follows:

* Approve accounts payable documents daily
* Prepare and/or enter monthly, quarterly and annual journal entries
* Pull reports for drawdowns
* Prepare construction in progress (CIP) rollforwards and reconciliations
* Prepare CIP project spreadsheets for review for capitalization
* Review invoices coded to capital project accounts for review
* Prepare capitalized interest calculations
* Pull reports for and prepare quarterly and annual financial statements
* Perform flux analytics on financial statements and answer questions from the Accountants, Senior Accountants and Controller
* Calculate quarterly Transit admin charges
* Roll forward prior year PBC (prepared by client) workpapers for the audit
* Prepare some of the PBC workpapers for the audit
* Roll forward prior year files for the City's CAFR (Comprehensive Annual Financial Report)
* Maintain the schedule of PBCs for the auditors
* Review payables/ receivables for accrual at yearend
* Conduct annual physical inventories
* Validate and enter data into Munis (new ERP System)
* Various special projects

Work will assigned based on the intern's level of education. These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive and other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Examples of Work Performed:

The following duties are some examples of work that may be performed by the Controller's Office accounting interns. The interns will report directly to the Controller and assist the Controller's Office Accountants/ Senior Accountants as needed.

Requirements of Work:

* Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information.
* Ability to research, analyze, summarize and report findings.
* Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and/or the public.
* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to take direction and constructive criticism from supervisors.
* Completion of work assignments may require operation of a vehicle and ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License.
* May require the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
* May require ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds, construction and windy conditions.
* May require ability to cover uneven terrain, go up and down stairs, and otherwise maneuver around construction sites.
* The intern will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training: Qualified candidates will be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate accounting program and have completed and passed the basic and intermediate accounting courses. Recently graduated accounting students may also apply. For undergraduate students, you must be at a college junior class status by the Fall 2018 semester. A thorough knowledge of accounting concepts and standards is required. Your most current semester transcript should be uploaded at application. Completion of additional questions on the application is also required.
