Job Description

Nature Center Coordinator-Bilingual (Temporary/ Part-Time).

The City of Watsonville’s Nature Center is seeking a highly motivated individual who can engage and educate the public on a wide range of topics. The Nature Center is housed under the Public Works and Utilities Department. This position provides education and interpretation to visitors of all ages about Public Works services and Nature Center programs, such as water conservation, waste reduction, pollution prevention, wetland protection, and wastewater recycling.

This position leads interpretative nature walks through our award-winning wetland trail system, provides community presentations, coordinates and implements community events, and helps with ongoing maintenance of exhibits and program administration. This position requires working weekends during Nature Center open hours and once or twice during the week. Spanish/English bilingual skills are required.

Examples of Essential Duties - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates and directs activities and programs at the Nature Center
  • Develops and implements special classes and events
  • Develops and maintains interpretive displays
  • Communicates orally in English and Spanish to Nature Center visitors
  • Translates written information relating to the Nature Center from English to Spanish
  • Prepares materials for educational activities
  • Recruits, directs and monitors the work of volunteers
  • Trains, directs, coordinates and formally evaluates the work of subordinate personnel
  • Promotes activities and events in the community; prepares flyers, posters and media releases
  • Meets with community groups to encourage involvement
  • Provides educational programs to students and classes in the Environmental Education Program, summer conservation awareness program and at the Environmental Science Workshop
  • Develops and maintains a resource library relating to the wetlands and local water resource issues
  • Supervises use of facility, equipment and supplies and schedules use of facility
  • Drives students to special activities and events
  • Conducts financial transactions and maintains inventory
  • Prepares reports, correspondence and budget estimates for assigned programs
  • Ensures compliance with safety measures by visitors and students
  • Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required

City of Watsonville $23.38 - $31.33 per hour.
