THE POSITION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of sidewalk and tree care tasks including the planting, fertilizing, watering, trimming, and removal of the public trees in the city, sidewalk repair to include cutting removing, and replacing concrete sidewalks. Work is performed on streets, in right of way areas, in City parks, and other areas.

Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on a rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.

This job classification is flexibly staffed and the position may be filled at either level depending on the qualifications of the incumbent and the staffing needs of the City. An eligibility list is being established to fill the current vacancies as well as future part-time or full-time related vacancies

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Tree Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level class in the Tree Maintenance series and is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties as assigned to the journey level class within this series. This class is typically used as a training class in that positions may have limited experience. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Tree Maintenance Worker II: This is the full journey level class of the Tree Maintenance series and is distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, under general supervision with only occasional instruction or assistance. May lead or direct others, in the absence of a lead worker. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Performs a variety of tree and sidewalk maintenance related tasks; plants, transplants, prunes, stakes and waters trees using reclaimed water; inspects and evaluates sidewalk disruptions caused by trees and other factors, inspects and evaluates trees for insects, diseases and other abnormalities that impact tree health and safety; assists in the removal of trees; picks up limbs and branches and feeds them into a chipper; uses aerial lifts, works from the ground; investigates problems concerning trees, particularly as to clearance of sidewalks, streets, traffic signals, and utility lines; removes broken and dead limbs; operates a variety of tree trimming equipment, truck mounted aerial lifts, chippers, chipper trucks, stump grinders, saws, ladders, special equipment and vehicles, and assists in their maintenance; may lead or direct others, in the absence of a lead worker; performs other related duties as required.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES

License: (Both Classes) Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.

Within six months of employment, incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter, maintain the following licenses: 1) California Class B driver's license with the allowable Auto Transmission restriction. 2) According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), drug testing is required.

Certificates: Certified Tree Worker designations from the International Society of Arboriculture is highly desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment: works outdoors in seasonal climate and weather conditions on surfaces that may be wet and slippery, where dirt, dust, and odors are frequently encountered. Required to drive motorized vehicles to various locations. Physical Abilities: hearing and speaking sufficient to exchange information in person or on the telephone; vision within normal range with or without correction; standing, sitting, walking on level and slippery surfaces, pushing, pulling, climbing, jumping, balancing, reaching/stretching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, and stooping in the performance of daily activities; ability to lift/carry/push/pull tools and/or equipment. Use hands repetitively to handle, feel, grasp or operate tools and equipment. Use power tools and equipment. May wear ear and eye protection and hard-toed shoes. Hazards: exposure to heavy dust/dirt, pollen, exhaust/fumes, solvents, oil, hydraulic fluid, vibrations associated with power tools, and noise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Tree Maintenance Worker I: A combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade and one year of full-time experience in tree maintenance and trimming or related groundskeeping.

Tree Maintenance Worker II: A combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade and 2 1/2 years full time tree maintenance and trimming experience, or 18 months experience as a Tree Maintenance Worker I with the City of Ventura.

BENEFITS

Employment Information: Right to Work: Before employment, candidates must submit documentation verifying legal right to work in the United States. Background Check: A pre-employment verification of background, references, and medical examination will be conducted. A drug screening may be required for some positions. Applicants for positions using City vehicles will be required to submit a DMV report. Probationary Period: Twelve months.

Deferred Compensation: $442 per year will be matched in a Section 457 Plan.

Medical/Dental Insurance: Up to $691 monthly toward a selection of plans. Medical insurance is effective the first of the month after date of hire. Dental insurance is effective the first of the second month after date of hire.

Vision Insurance: City paid coverage provided for employees and their dependents. Vision insurance is effective the first of the month after date of hire.

Optional Benefits: $469 monthly, which may be applied toward medical insurance premiums. Cash-out option is not available.

Life Insurance: City paid term life insurance equal to the employee's annual salary, and dependent life insurance of $2,000 per dependent.

Disability Insurance: City paid short-term and long-term disability coverage.

Retirement: Tier I - 2% @ 55/Single Highest Year of Compensation for Classic CalPERS members who worked for the City prior to December 31, 2012 and are returning to City employment. Employees make a 7% member contribution, and may be subject to compensation limits per Section 401(a)(17) of the IRC. Tier II - 2% @ 60/3-Year Final Compensation Period for Classic CalPERS members with less than a six-month break in service from another CalPERS or CalPERS'-reciprocal agency. Employees make a 7% member contribution, and may be subject to compensation limits per Section 401(a)(17) of the IRC. Tier III - 2% at 62/3-Year Final Compensation Period for New CalPERS members. Employees make a 6.25% member contribution, and are subject to compensation limits per Government Code Section 7522.10. Additional details regarding the City's retirement plan will be provided to candidates during the job offer process.

Social Security: CalPERS members do not participate in Social Security retirement so there is no payroll deduction. Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your Social Security upon retirement. For further information contact a Social Security office or ww.socialsecurity.gov/form1945

Medicare: Employees participate only in the Medicare portion of Social Security. There is a 1.45% payroll deduction for this benefit.

Annual Leave: 3 weeks per year, increasing to 5 weeks after 15 years service, for vacation and sick leave. Employees may use vacation after successful completion of probation.

Personal Leave: 27 hours per calendar year.

Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year.

Tuition Reimbursement: $2,500 per year for tuition and books for courses taken at accredited institution and after completion of probationary period.

Direct Deposit: Paychecks are automatically deposited to employee accounts.

Flexible Workweek: A 9/80 workweek is available for some positions

Wellness Program: A comprehensive program is available, including on-site gym, exercise classes, downtown/beach-walking routes, weight loss, and tips on nutrition and healthy lifestyle.
