Job Description

The Topeka Zoo, an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and a member of the Association of Zoo Horticulture, is seeking a well-rounded enthusiastic Horticulturist Gardner that works well in a team setting, has a broad knowledge of horticulture with an appreciation for exotic animals and zoos. The Horticulturist will care for 49 acres of lawns, landscapes and animal habitats, including a tropical rain forest, seasonal butterfly exhibit, browse garden, and a number of wild and display gardens. There is a 3 acre Japanese style garden currently under construction with a 2020 opening date.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Must be knowledgeable and able to perform tasks that include planting, transplanting, dividing, weeding, watering, fertilizing.
* The ability and knowledge of pruning, shaping, dead heading, plant bed prep, composting, mulching is required along with an understanding of the varieties of edible and toxic plants, landscape design, and propagation.
* The candidate must have the ability to operate equipment such mowers, blowers, tillers, chain saws, tractors, skid loaders and trucks.
* The position works with volunteers and interns, other members of the zoo team and occasionally horticulturists with other organizations.
* The candidate must be able to work in weather extremes and lift 50 pounds. Weekends and evening coverage may be scheduled according to the Zoo event schedule. This is a full time position working 40 hours a week.

$18.32 per hour.
