Minimum Qualifications:

* Must be at least 21 years of age at date of hire.
* Must be free from felony or domestic violence convictions.
* Must meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance and agility.
* U.S. citizenship or a permanent resident alien who is eligible, and has applied for, U.S. citizenship.
* High school diploma or GED. Additional education at the community college level is preferred.
* Possession of, or the ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
* POST Entry-level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) written examination certificate with a T-score of 48 or higher obtained within the 12 months immediately preceding application submission.
* POST Entry-level physical agility examination - Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) certificate with a score of 384 and above and successful completion of a 1.5 mile run (completed in 14 minutes or less). Certificate must be issued within the 12 months immediately preceding application submission.

These examinations are administered by South Bay Regional Public Safety Consortium (SBRPSTC) and are designed to meet the Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) requirements.

SBRPSTC requires a fee from applicants for taking the PELLETB & WSTB tests. There are a limited number of seats for the examination dates listed at SBRPSTC for both PELLETB & WSTB tests. Register early before all seats are sold out.

ATTACH COPIES OF PELLETB AND WSTB CERTIFICATIONS TO YOUR ONLINE APPLICATION VIA CALOPPS AS PDF DOCUMENTS. Certificate issuance dates must be no older than 12 months from the date of the application submission. Applicants who fail to submit copies of their certificates may be eliminated at any point in the process.

Selection Process:

The Examination Process will consist of the following independent parts:

1. Examination process will first consist of a review of application materials, responses to supplemental questionnaire, and POST Entry-level Law Enforcement Test Battery Written Exam and WSTB/1.5 Mile Run certificates.

2. Candidates with complete application packet, including submission of the valid POST written and physical agility examination certificates, will be placed on the eligible employment list valid for one year. Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process and placement on the eligible employment list.

Appeals concerning administration of an examination must be submitted in writing within two business days from the date the event occurred.

3. Top scoring eligible candidates will receive via e-mail a Personal History Statement (PHS) to complete and return.

4. Based on review of the PHS, candidate may be scheduled for a panel oral interview examination.

Prior to appointment, the selected candidate must submit to and successfully pass a background investigation. This will minimally include a polygraph examination and a thorough examination of education, employment, military service, credit history, criminal history, DMV records and personal history. Upon receipt of a conditional offer of employment, candidate will then be required to successfully pass a pre-placement psychological and medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment. The City's standards must be met before a final appointment is made. Candidates may be disqualified at any point in this process. The City reserves the right to use alternate testing procedures if deemed necessary. Police Recruits are initially hired in the non-sworn civilian classification while attending the Police Academy and will become a Police Officer when sworn in.

Benefits

Salary: $40.37/hour

Retirement: As a Recruit, participation in the CalPERS Miscellaneous benefit formula. In compliance with AB 340, CalPERS retirement formula is either 2% at age 60; employee pays approximately 7%, OR 2% at age 62; employee pays approximately 6.5% of pay, depending on individual's eligibility. Once a sworn Police Officer, CalPERS benefit formula changes to that of Safety employees.

Social Security and Medicare participation; and option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after-retirement account.

Health Insurance: City offers choice among two HMO and two PPO plans, and offers vision and dental benefits. City pays 100% of vision and dental core plan premiums for employee and eligible dependents. Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO health premium cost based on category of coverage (single, two, family). For PPO, employee pays additional cost difference between PPO and HMO plans. City offers flexible spending plans (medical and dependent care), supplemental life insurance and a discretionary benefit option for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.

Premium Pay: City offers various education, bilingual pay, and special assignment pay incentives.

Retirement Health Savings (RHS) Plan: Employee shall contribute 1% of base pay each pay period.

Vacation: Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, depending on length of service.

Holidays: Fourteen paid holidays, per year, including one floating holiday.

Programs: Long Term Care, Employee Assistance Plan, Credit Union, Recreation Classes, and Reduced-fee Child-care Programs, and Deferred Compensation are available to city employees.
