Job Description


The Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk, VA is seeking an experienced and energetic part-time Zookeeper to aide in the care and handling of its animal population. Work involves ensuring good standards are maintained throughout the Virginia Zoological Park. The Zookeeper will also assist with the design and maintenance of exhibits, perform administrative duties, and educate the public by conducting tours, providing information, and giving presentations to school groups and other visitors. This position will primarily be trained to work in the Bird/Australia and ZooFarm/North America animal teams but may be assigned to other animal areas at the zoo as needed.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

* Observes animals by checking for medical problems, changes in behavior, feeding habits, and overall well-being.
* Feeds animals as specified by curatorial and lead keeper staff in accordance with nutritional and behavioral requirements.
* Treats sick or injured animals with specified medications under the direction of veterinary staff.
* Cleans, disinfects and maintains animal exhibits, enclosures, food and water dishes, pools and other areas.
* Keeps daily records on each animal - behavioral observations, and exhibit integrity and maintenance issues.
* Supervises interns & volunteers when required.
* Conducts public animal demonstrations for zoo visitors and writes educational presentations.
* Performs all other duties as assigned.

In addition, the preferred candidate will:

* Have the ability to handle and assist in the restraint and capture of animals.
* Have the ability to clean, disinfect and maintain animal exhibits and enclosures.
* Have the ability to lift heavy feed and manure receptacles and walk long distances.
* Have considerable knowledge of behavioral characteristics and handling procedures for assigned animals.
* Have experience with operant conditioning and enrichment techniques.
* Have the ability to retain knowledge of animal restraint apparatus such as ropes, squeeze cages, catch poles, shifts, nets, etc.
* Have the ability to use tools and operate small equipment.
* Have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and work in a team environment.
* Have the ability to work in a friendly and professional manner with staff, volunteers, colleagues and zoo visitors.


Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college/university program or equivalent.

Minimum of one (1) year work experience in an accredited zoo or previous work experience with animal care in a zoological collection or wildlife rehabilitation.

The preferred candidate will have one (1) year of experience working in an AZA accredited institution as a zoo keeper, paid zoo keeper intern, or similar position.


Work Location: Virginia Zoological Park, 3500 Granby Street, Norfolk 23504.

Work Hours: 20 hours per week, schedule to be determined, will be required to work weekends and holidays, as well at least one regular weekday as assigned.
