Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS Benefits Supplemental Questions

Perform entry level professional duties of moderate difficulty providing the opportunity for professional training in various offices throughout the City. Perform assigned duties to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successful performance. Specific activities vary by department. Work is performed under direct supervision.

This internship is with the Risk Management & Purchasing Department located at 520 North Lake Parker Avenue in Lakeland, FL. Interns will work a maximum of 20 hours a week. The time period for the internship is Tuesday, May 26th to Friday, July 31st.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

* Exposure to multiple aspects of the Risk Management Function
* Safety in the workplace
* Workers' Compensation nuts to bolts
* Liability vs. Risk: Why do I or my business need insurance coverage?
* What does MSDS mean to me?
* Warehouse inventory FIFO
* Summer process improvement project: What can I add to the Risk Department?

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Participation in the LEDC Summer Leadership Program is a required opportunity of the internship if the student is interning during the summer
* Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE) AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Enrollment in or recent graduation from a degree seeking program in an accredited college or university in Risk Management/Insurance, Business, or a field related to the area of internship.

Required: Unofficial college transcript must be uploaded with application to confirm applicant's major.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Desire to work in Risk/Human Resources/Safety field to support local community
* Exceptional customer service skills
* Ability to listen to and empathize with others
* Desire to help others learn at their level
* Ability to multitask in a fast paced environment
* Skill in the use of personal computers and standard office equipment
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites
* Keyboarding
* Ability to promptly and effectively complete tasks
* Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with supervisor, co- workers, other City employees and the public
* Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing, and to request clarification when needed

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:

* Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, routine keyboard operations
* The job risks exposure to no significant environmental hazards
* The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing and speaking
