Job Description

This is part-time public relations work focused on awareness and education of blight prevention and the promotion of clean, safe and vibrant City of Jacksonville communities. This work consists of facilitating guest experiences and visits with JaxCan and/or Stripes D. Skunk, assisting the mascot while walking to navigate surroundings and attending to other logistical needs of the mascot. This work requires frequent physical body movement, standing for extended periods of time, walking for extended periods of time, and the ability to manage hot and humid environments. Contacts require skills in positive interactions with children and adults, the ability to remain energetic and engage and entertain audiences. The physical demands are high because most work is performed at outdoor events throughout the year, with occasional events in a climate controlled environment.

Examples of Work

* Serves as the voice of the mascot and represents the City of Jacksonville at sponsored events as well as art, athletic and community events.
* Interacts with children, adults and the community by answering questions about the mascot and taking pictures and videos.
* Educates community members on blight, cleanup efforts and how to keep Jacksonville aesthetically appealing.
* Distributes business cards, shows individuals how to download and use the MyJax application and shares general City contact information.
* Guides the mascot to and from the designated dressing room.
* Walks with the mascot throughout the event and remains standing.
* Understands social expressions of others.
* Participates in video skits, commercials and advertisements.
* Takes pictures with and signs autographs for individuals.
* Remains friendly, outgoing and in character.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

This position pays $13.00 per hour or higher depending on experience.

* Must be able to lift and carry a costume that weighs 20 pounds.
* Must be able to walk, bend, rotate and help the mascot move around.
* Must be between 5'4" and 5'10" tall and weighing up to 185 pounds to fit costume.
* Must be able to work flexible hours, evenings, weekends and in inclement weather.
* Must exhibit strong customer services skills, consistently present a professional image, and learn scripts.
* Must work well with children and adults.
* Required to pass a pre-employment physical.


* FL Class E Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained.
* Must meet standards required to obtain a City of Jacksonville driver's certification.
