Job Description

Job Summary

The Development Reviewer Intern will assist Water and Sewer Personnel in designing, developing, and managing a GIS database and database management system. Tasks will include the research and conversion of historic documents with legal descriptions to digital form, modifying or adapting standard software to meet program needs, and developing a map to display and analyze the collected data. Opportunity for field visits may arise during the internship. Coordination between divisions may occur throughout the development of projects. This position will be given the opportunity to develop an independent project throughout the summer, which will be presented to the Senior Management staff at the end of the internship.

Scheduled Hours: 25-30 hours per week during regularly scheduled business hours

Potential Duration: May - August, with the possibility of extension

Experience, Knowledge, Skills

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:

* Understand and use ESRI ArcGIS software for cartographic production and basic editing
* Utilize ArcGIS tools to analyze spatial data and maintain/populate databases
* Enter GIS property descriptions using coordinate geometry
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, citizens, and other persons contacted in the course of the work
* Communicate both orally and in writing
* Demonstrate knowledge of the principles and practices of real estate as they apply to a local government open space program desirable
* Demonstrate general knowledge of planning and zoning and the ability to read and understand site plan drawings and subdivision plans

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

* Perform data collection using Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and software; import GPS data into databases
* Demonstrate experience and familiarity with the use of Collector for ArcGIS
* Developing data collection applications
* Understand deeds and legal descriptions

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Office environment and field work
* Remains in a sitting/standing position for extended periods of time
* Busy office activity with frequent interruptions and inflexible deadlines

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Vision enough to interpret written documents
* Communication skills enough to convey information to the public and other City employees
* Mobility enough to inspect field sites, sometimes crossing over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces
