Job Description

Job Advertisement

The Wright Park Zoo, located in Dodge City, Kansas is now accepting applications for zoo keeper internships. Interns will gain valuable knowledge and hands on experience working with professional staff to help care for the animals at the zoo.

Responsibilities include:

* Exhibit/Enclosure maintenance
* Food preparation and distribution
* Animal observation
* Documentation
* Animal Enrichment
* Interaction with the public
* Some grounds maintenance

Zoo keeper internships consist of a scheduled work week to be determined by the Head Zoo Keeper and intern. Length of internship will be determined by the need of the intern for college credit, though may extend for longer if desired by the intern. Interns will be expected to work in 8 hour shifts with an hour lunch break unless otherwise discussed and agreed upon with the Head Zoo Keeper. Interns must be flexible with their schedule and have the ability to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Experience

Preferred but not required:

* Zoo keeper internships are physically demanding. Interns must be able to work in small spaces or in awkward positions that require bending or stretching and be able to safely lift up to 50lbs.
* The zoo has very little indoor space. Interns must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Be able to tolerate strong odors such as hay, dust, animal hair/fur/dander, and some cleaning products.
* Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, preference will given to those in a biology or agriculture related major.

Compensation

This internship is an unpaid internship. No housing or transportation is provided. Interns will be able to earn Continuing Education Units through San Diego Zoo Global Academy courses that will be taken during their internship.
