General Summary Benefits Supplemental Questions

Make a positive impact in our community and in the lives of children and families by providing recreational experiences to individuals with disabilities as a Customer Service Attendant II with the Adaptive Recreation Division of Charlottesville Parks and Recreation.

The starting amount is $16.50 an hour. This is a temporary part-time position, no benefits.

This position performs in a responsible facility and program management role to include, but not limited to: supervision of adaptive programs, classes, events, and activities which provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in programs such as Supper Club, social activities, recreational activities, overnight and day trips, and other activities; performs related duties as required. Work hours vary, nights, weekends, and some holidays required.

Works with children, teens and adults with disabilities which include: various levels of intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, physical disabilities and various levels of autism; Works directly in recreational programs providing verbal direction and physical assistance to staff, participants and volunteers; physical assistance to participants (i.e.- lifting and transferring from/to wheelchairs, securing wheelchairs in vans/buses for transportation; hand over hand assistance with activities of daily living, etc.). Primarily and most frequently this position serves as the lead on-site personnel or manager on duty within one functional area and/or facility and under general direction. May supervise temporary or volunteer staff. Reports to a Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

* Provides leadership to assigned facility, or site, as manager on duty, or the supervisor, of an adaptive program or activity;
* Assists with the planning, organization, preparation and implementation of recreation-related programming for individuals with disabilities;
* Provides inclusion support to individuals with disabilities within a general recreation setting, including the transport and escort of participants and/or staff to classes, events, trips, and/or recreational facilities;
* Assists in providing the safe operation and security of recreation centers, fields, courts, parks and programming sites through daily inspections of the site and equipment, reporting needed repairs to management;
* Supervises the conduct of participants during recreation programming and facility sites;
* Communicates effectively, professionally, courteously and thoroughly with the highest regard to the customer;
* Maintains order by enforcing policy and rules and regulations and removes and suspends non-conforming participants;
* Assists in the registration of participants in recreation programs;
* Assists in the scheduling of games, meets and events;
* Prepares and submits incident and accident reports to immediate supervisor for documentation;
* May train part-time, volunteer or student assistants, instructors, game officials and others with regard to City and departmental policies and games and class standards and rules;
* Responsible for the oversight of custodial functions throughout the assigned location, up to and including performing basic custodial tasks when needed;
* Inventories, maintains and stores recreation equipment, materials and supplies, requisitions- required material, equipment and supplies;
* Responds effectively to emergencies within the assigned facility or during assigned program;
* Provides information to the public regarding recreation activities and benefits of participation;
* Responsible for all policy and procedures associated with facility, park and program management to include cash handling operating policy and procedures;
* Evaluates program and facility staff as assigned;
* Performs related tasks as required.



Education, Experience and Skills: Minimum Requirements:

* Must be at least 21 years of age by employment start date.
* Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.
* Minimum of six (6) months of professional experience with adaptive recreation programs, facility management, athletics, or other recreational environments.

* Must be able to work flexible schedule including early mornings, weeknights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Additional coursework in athletics, recreation, fitness and wellness or related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of professional behavior in a recreation environment; maintains order by enforcing Parks and Recreation rules and regulations; ability to instruct recreational activities; ability to establish effective working relationships with all staff, program participants and the general public; ability to prepare and maintain administrative and financial records; ability to effectively supervise and evaluate staff to achieve desired objectives; skilled in supervising small and large special events; skilled in interpreting policy and procedures; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Physical Conditions & Work Contacts: Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, stand-by/on-call and/or emergency on-call.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.

Position requires driving a City-owned vehicle and is subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures.

Dependent upon assignment, a majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste and/or blood-borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

About City of Charlottesville

We also manage the Gas Assistance Program (GAP), a local fund to help eligible households with the cost of heating their homes. This program is funded through private donations and City of Charlottesville contributions. The Utility Billing Division is broken down into 2 sections. There is Collections, which collects past due accounts and assists customers with payment arrangements, and Customer Service, which takes applications, terminations and answers any questions customers may have about their bills. Every month our meter readers read your water and/or gas meters. The City of Charlottesville uses an automatic meter reading system. Meters are read using a radio signal and this system allows us to read meters in all weather conditions. The City is presently offering 2 Rebates. There is a rebate for replacing your regular thermostat in your City Gas heated home with a programmable thermostat.
