Description

The City of Champaign seeks qualified candidates for a career opportunity as a Civil Engineering Apprentice in the Public Works Department. This is a limited-term position funded through June 30, 2021.

Responsibilities of Position

Under the direct supervision of senior staff this position will perform technical tasks related to the inspection and documentation of construction activities for the $42 million federally funded Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: observation of construction activities; measurement and documentation of construction materials and quantities in accordance with City, State and Federal requirements; written and verbal communication with contractors, project partners and adjacent property owners.

Required Qualifications

* A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from a college or university accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
* Computer skills working with word processing, spreadsheets and/or databases (e.g. Word, Excel, Access).
* Availability to work outside of normal work hours when construction activities are taking place.
* A valid Illinois driver's license, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, and a good driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

* Previous engineering experience with a municipal, county, state or federal government agency.
* Technical work experience in civil engineering (e.g. working as an engineering intern, performing construction inspection, conveying or enforcing policies and standards).
* Customer service experience.
* Basic knowledge of field surveying, CAD and GIS systems, construction plans, specifications and standards.

Drug screening will be required. The annual starting salary range is $56,754 - $64,608, DOQ, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, September 10, 2017.
