Job Description

Part-time position. Average hours per week: 10-15. Regularly scheduled on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Weekends assigned on a rotation basis.

General Statement of Duties: Assists the Librarian at the Information Desk. Gives accurate information to those requesting assistance by telephone or in person. Accepts monies and makes change. Monitors the study rooms, public computer stations, and computer reservation stations to insure orderly flow of users and prevent misuse of equipment. Works in busy conditions that may be stressful. Assists Librarians with building security via regular walk-throughs in the main, lower, and meeting room levels.

Examples of Work: Greets patrons, listens to, and understands a patron's request and accurately answers that question or refers to duty librarian, if necessary. Accepts payments for services and makes change quickly and accurately. Follows opening and closing procedures at the beginning and end of the day. Troubleshoots various equipment used by the public which includes, but is not limited to, the typewriter, microfilm reader/printer, computers and associated printers, photocopiers, and fax machine. Consults with Head of Information Services or duty librarian on library policies when appropriate. Assists with building security via regular walk-throughs of the main, lower, and meeting room levels. Reports any issues for concern to duty librarian. Accurately checks in and distributes newspapers on weekends. Monitors the study rooms, public computer stations, and computer reservation stations to insure orderly flow of users and prevent misuse of equipment. Performs other duties as assigned by the Head of Information Services or duty librarian.

Minimum Qualifications

Four-year college degree preferred. Previous work experience dealing with the public preferred.

Specials Requirements

Must be able to understand and relay library policy information. Must be able to work with the public and other members of the Library staff on a one-to-one basis and have proven people skills. Must be able to multi-task and work under busy conditions that may cause stress. Must be able to make change quickly and accurately. Must be able to work evenings and occasional weekends. Should have an outgoing personality and ability to assist patrons in a friendly, confident and self-assured manner. Must be able to listen to patrons, accurately determine their requests, and assist them accordingly. Must maintain dress and personal hygiene appropriate for meeting the public and to inspire confidence in the Library's patrons. Must be familiar with Library's online catalog and associated databases in order to assist the public with their use. Must be familiar with assorted types of equipment, including but not limited to, typewriters, computers and associated printers, microfilm reader/printer, photocopiers, and fax machine. Must be able to push a fully-loaded book cart, shelve books/magazines to a height of 6 feet and lift up to 25 pounds at a time.

Must be familiar with the Dewey Decimal system and be able to alphabetize for the proper reshelving and/or retrieval of books, periodicals, etc.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. No sponsorships considered. Subject to pre-employment drug testing and background checks.
