Job Description

Role Purpose:

The Unit Leader is responsible for the Portfolio management and leadership of their respective team within the National Underwriting Centre (NUC). This includes, but is not limited to, portfolio management, distribution and assignment of work, monitoring all daily activities including quality control practices, monitoring management operating service reports, ensuring appropriate training is conducted and addressing customer service issues, technical underwriting including referral duties with the ultimate goal of ensuring the profitable growth of the various portfolios within their team.

This role reports to and works closely with the Financial Lines Underwriting Manager, NUC to ensure established goals and objectives are achieved. The role also works closely with the branch, product managers and distribution teams.

Responsibilities:

Specific duties/responsibilities are detailed in the individual's performance plan, based on the following key performance goals:

Financial Plan

* Achieve the financial targets of the P&C business unit, including the GWP retention, rate, premium growth and loss ratio targets.

Leadership

* Manage renewal workload and team capacity management.
* Identify training needs and carry out necessary training with underwriters and underwriting assistants in joint partnership with management.
* Managing underwriter performance and development in joint partnership with management
* Ensure adherence to expected Broker Service Standards
* Carry out referrals within authority, providing underwriting guidance where necessary.
* Liaise with branch and distribution stakeholders, providing portfolio and market intelligence
* Recruiting, motivating and retaining quality underwriters in joint partnership with management to create a positive team environment
* Portfolio management of your allocated line of business

Underwriting

* Underwrite and manage your portfolio of business in line with company strategy.
* Identify and analyse challenges and areas of poor performance within the portfolio, determining appropriate business actions to improve position and implement those actions, in conjunction with management.
* Lead and execute an effective cross-sell opportunities (where relevant)
* Develop and maintain productive long-term relationships with Producers
* Ensure own and team member adherence to underwriting standards, authority, best practice and guidelines
* Achieve Underwriting Audit Scores (including Self-Audits) of 80% or higher and conduct peer reviews
* Maintain appropriate file documentation; ensure accurate risk reports are completed and Underwriting Authority sought in advance where required and
* Manage effective & appropriate unit communication with NUC and broker operations staff
* Assists manager in providing input on underwriting results, profit analysis, market and environment, competitor analysis and as required for ad hoc reports and projects

Experience & Skills Required:

Essential

* Thorough Underwriting knowledge in P&C lines
* Proven record of successful underwriting management of a portfolio of P&C business
* Proven record of successful growth of profitable business, through both new business and renewal growth
* Aptitude to further develop leadership capability.
* Looks for solutions to unique underwriting situations.
* Consistently displays initiative and seeks opportunities to innovate
* Ability to understand and interpret policy wordings
* Is comfortable with a wide range of negotiation techniques.
* Is a clear and concise communicator
* Has demonstrated ability to work well with people and influence decisions.
* Desire and ability to cross train in other P&C lines of business

Desirable

* Strong profile in the broker market with proven marketing success in developing key broker relationships and achievement of GWP growth.
* Experience in people management and staff development
* Has demonstrated ability to effectively train entry level underwriters and to orient new experienced hires.
* Understands the underwriting appetites of the other departments and how those relate to interdepartmental accounts.
* Makes recommendations for tailoring coverage and manuscripting policies.
* Is familiar with the products / services of key competitors.
