Job Description

Job Summary

Responsible for the facilitation and/or development and implementation of evidence based guidance documents to support the provision of excellent clinical nursing care i.e. nursing standards, procedures, and job aides.  Identifies, collects (when appropriate),  analyzes, manages, and evaluates data and information to support clinical practice and organizational strategic goals. Provides consultation to individuals and groups of staff.  Fosters staff development, participates in scholarly and research activities.  

The Vascular Access Services Nursing Practice Specialist will introduce and integrate systems, be essential in the PICC program development and management, and be an integral team member for PIV Infiltrates and Harm Prevention work hospital-wide.

Job Responsibilities

Collaborates with nursing personnel to develop, plan, implement, and evaluate clinical nursing guidance documents, as well as the processes and structures for managing the care of patients and supporting practice:

  • Develops plan for review of nursing standards and procedures.
  • Guides clinical experts in development of evidence-based standards and procedures assuring integration of professional and regulatory standards.
  • In collaboration with Nursing Education, identifies educational support for implementation of system modifications.
  • Collaborates with nurse leaders and staff nurses for overall implementation of nursing standards, procedures, job aides, and patient care manual guidance documents.

 

Serves as the Nursing Practice liaison to the QPPS shared governance council.

  • Collaborates with the procedure and standards review group to assure staff nurse approval of guidance documents.
  • Serves on Nursing and Hospital committees related to nursing clinical practice.
  • Leads nursing department determined initiatives related to nursing clinical practice.
  • Communicates quality improvement data related to nursing outcomes.


Completes designated projects as assigned.

 

Participates in scholarly activities to enhance own level of competence and that of the nursing staff.

  • Maintains fluency of new knowledge in nursing and dissemination/change science. Incorporate knowledge into activities.
  • Participates in graduate student education as requested.
  • Participates in scholarly activities including: writing for publication; presentation of a lecture, abstract or poster at a national conference.
  • Participates in research activities:  generates research ideas; assists staff in utilization of research and evidence based practice. 

 

Works collaboratively with Nurse leaders and educators to promote and support the use of technology in practice.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

RN - Registered Nurse

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Masters of Science in Nursing or related field. Graduate of an NLNAC and/or CCNE accredited nursing program. If Master’s degree not in nursing, must have a BSN. If MSN, must be from an NLNAC and/or CCNE accredited program.

 

Required Experience: Minimum of 5 years nursing experience, with evidence of progressive leadership.

  • Basic use of patient facing technology. (e.g. IV pumps, point of care devices, CR monitors).
  • Navigation and use of clinical communication systems.

 

Information Literacy

  • Determines the nature and extent of clinical information needed and uses the appropriate technology to access it.
  • Accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.
  • Evaluates information and its sources critically and appropriately incorporates it into clinical practice.
  • Evaluates outcomes of the use of information.

     

Information Management Literacy

  • Navigation of the electronic health record system.
  • Ability to locate and review specific patient data in various clinical information systems.
  • Effectively uses clinical decision support tools.
  • Understands policies and procedures, confidentiality, security, and privacy regulations regarding the use of clinical information systems.
  • Ability to collect clinical data using quality improvement tools.
