Job Description

As the nation’s children’s hospital, the mission of Children’s National Medical Center is to excel in Care, Advocacy, Research and Education. The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for implementing the School Health program under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. These activities may include: monitoring of vital signs, height and weight, hearing and vision screening, scoliosis screening, and referrals. Assists the registered nurse in determining the needs of the general student population and children with special health care needs. Rotates to assigned schools as needed.

Minimum Education

Must possess a valid unencumbered license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nursing in the District of Columbia. Must maintain current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid from a recognized provider.

Minimum Work Experience

2 years
At least 2 years of supervised nursing experience in community health or child health prior to entry into school nursing practice. Experience in the care of school-aged children.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Knowledge and understanding of a school health program, including recognizing trends relating to school health as well as developmental patterns and needs of school-age children. Knowledge of the techniques of data collection for an analysis of health needs. Knowledge of a wide variety of medical conditions, diagnoses, and specific diseases. Knowledge of medications and medication administration practices. Ability to provide general health information to school age children and families with a wide variety of health problems under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
