Respiratory Care Practitioner who functions as an identified resource to staff in a service area. Provides comprehensive patient care to a variety of patients. Incorporates all members of the health care team in the planning and delivery of patient care. Deals successfully with the most complex clinical problems as they related to ECMO. Demonstrates expanded knowledge base through participation in program projects and activities. In urgent/emergent situations, this staff member may be transferred into regular staffing as required.
Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through the completion of a minimum of two years of college training in an AMA approved Respiratory Care program; 4 year program preferred. BS in Respiratory or a related field preferred. RRT credential is required. All Respiratory Care Practitioners must demonstrate evidence of application of License with the District of Columbia Regulatory Agency prior to reporting for the first shift of clinical work through a letter of supervised practice. All Respiratory Care Practitioners must be able to provide a hard copy approved license to practice by day 90 of employment. ECMO Specialist-RT must be a RCP Level IV. RCP-IV must be oriented to both NICU and PICU and meet all requirements and competencies for those areas.
Minimum of 2 years of related clinical experience in a comparable setting. 1 year pediatric/neonatal experience preferred.
Registered Respiratory Therapist licensed in the District of Columbia. Successful completion of hospital orientation at CNMC. Prior ECMO experience preferred. Successful completion of CNMC ECMO course required within 6 months of hire. Ability to organize, establish priorities and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be decisive and able to perform under tense, emotional and stressful situations. Must have ability to perform solve clinical situations to include patient conditions and needs. Must demonstrate compassion and a custom service orientation when dealing with families, patients and co-workers. Must have ability to perform mathematical calculations. Basic computer skills a must. Other computer skills to include entry level Excel and data base management preferred. Must maintain clinical skills and maintain required continuing education credits for license.

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.
The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
