Qualifications

 Minimum Education


Specific Requirements and Preferences
This candidate must be a RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist), credentialed by the NBRC. A graduate of an AMA School of Respiratory Care, however, Bachelor’s degree in respiratory care or related field is preferred. This candidate must have completed / passed or be enrolled in both the CNMC ECMO program and RD-ECMO program. This candidate must have achieved a Level III status (minimum) in the RCS clinical ladder, Level IV preferred prior to applying for position. Level IV must be achieved within one year of being awarded the shift coordinator position.

Specific Requirements and Preferences
At least 4 years of acute and critical care experience in a pediatric setting or have 6 years minimum experience in an adult care setting. Pediatric experience is preferred. The candidate must also have a good performance standing.


Required Skills/Knowledge

Must have an excellent understanding of hemodynamics, intravascular homeostasis and ABGs and as those factors relate to patient care. Exceptional ability to verbalize, in a comprehensive manner, clinical, technical, and administrative issues is a must. This candidate will possess proven clinical thinking skills. He/she will have experience in pediatric diagnostic and treatment of patients of various etiologies. Must have the ability to organize, establish priorities and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be decisive and able to perform under tense, emotional and stressful situations. Must have ability to problem solve clinical situations to include patient conditions and needs. Must demonstrate compassion and a customer service orientation when dealing with families, patients and co-workers. Must function as a preceptor, participate in an advocacy activity and function as an instructor when called upon. Must have the ability to perform mathematical calculations. Basic computer skills are a must. Other computer skills to include entry level Excel and data base management preferred. Must maintain clinical skills and maintain required continuing education credits for license and department to include vent management, instruction, and precepting. Must meet the clinical and physical requirements to participate in either the Neonatal or Pediatric Transport Team. Must have physical ability to perform all treatment modalities. Must have physical ability to move, lift and carry patients, in addition, stamina to endure frequently long periods of standing and walking. Must be able to lift and move equipment and supplies> 50 lbs. Proficient at handling air, oxygen, and electrical shutdowns, planned or emergency.

Functional Accountabilities

Leadership
  1. Perform all patient care according to Hospital, Respiratory Care Services Department, and other interdepartmental policy and procedures to all age ranges of patients treated at CNMC.
  2. Ensure staff therapists provide patient care according to Hospital, Respiratory Care Services Department, and other interdepartmental policy and procedures to all age ranges of patients treated at CNMC when in charge of the shift.
  3. Function at the highest level of interpretation of clinical signs, symptoms, patient assessment, evaluation of intervention outcome, and effectiveness, and suggest changes as appropriate.
  4. Attend bi-weekly Management Team Meetings held by the RCS Director.
  5. Operate as a resource person throughout the entire organization, to interface with interdisciplinary team members in all respiratory care services, education, and performance improvement/quality assurance related matters.
  6. Will assist with procedures, such as in-house transports or other procedures when requested by a staff member when workloads become unmanageable.
Staff Support
  1. Teach and/or help new or less skilled personnel develop time management skills by evaluating and helping organize their workload.
  2. Provide verbal and/or written counseling to staff concerning patient care problems, misdocumentation, or any breech of policy and procedure.
  3. Work closely with RCS Education Coordinator and RCS Managers to ensure a proper number of trained therapists can work in all areas on all shifts.
  4. Organize an ongoing departmental in-service program and coordinate all educational aspects of the department.
Technology
  1. Able to instruct staff on basic use of computer.
  2. Act as a resource person for staff who need help with Cerner, checking e-mail, entering charges, or working with computers in general.
  3. Ensure all required written documentation and all data entry is thorough and complete; include all billing and check sheet completions.
  4. Participate in educational opportunities provided by the department and assist the Education Coordinator with departmental in-services or patient related training when called upon to do so.
Coordinate
  1. Ensure optimal staffing levels in all areas of the hospital, even if that means taking an assignment as needed.
  2. Assist with procedures, such as in-house transports or other procedures when requested by a staff member when workloads become unmanageable.
  3. Act as liaison between therapists and other healthcare team members when needed.
  4. Review, revise, and/or develop departmental policy and procedures pertaining to respiratory care services, when needed.
  5. Effectively communicate any patient related problem/emergency, family problem, or interdepartmental problem to department director, physician, nursing supervisor, or other departmental manager.
  6. Work with RCS Managers in order to schedule employees for CPR, PALS, and NRP classes.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
