Qualifications

 Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED

Specific Requirements and Preferences
HS Diploma or equivalent, plus completion of a 2 years (or greater) vocational/technical training program in a related field or an Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience in a related field. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Minimum Work Experience
2 Year(s)

Specific Requirements and Preferences
At least 2 - 3 years of Pediatric nursing a plus, early childhood education or similar pediatric health care setting experience required; experience in health care setting preferred.


Required Skills/Knowledge

Requires ability to recognize and be sensitive to developmental and emotional needs of children and the impact of surgery and hospitalization on children and families. Excellent communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills required to relate to children, families and staff. Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds required. Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults in a hospital setting.



Required Licenses and Certifications




Functional Accountabilities

Patient/Family Education
  1. Conduct tours with patient and families to familiarize them with procedures and hospital area.
  2. Answer questions regarding hospitalization.
  3. Work collaboratively with other relevant departments: Child Life, concierge services, surgery, cardiology, anesthesiology, admitting, PR and Marketing, etc., to keep information to families updated and accurate.
  4. Ensure the pre-surgical tour program meet the needs of patients and families and staff.
  5. Identify and procure necessary supplies (non threatening medical equipment and teaching dolls).
  6. Maintain and update registration material (sign-in sheets, surgery/ history questionnaire, and packet of take home information, etc.)

  1. Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
  2. Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation
  3. Stop in the face of uncertainty and takes time to resolve the situation
  4. Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication
  5. Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers
  6. Attend carefully to important details - practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review in order to self-check behavior and performance

Organizational Accountabilities (Staff)

Communication
  1. Follow-up weekly with reports inclusive of problem questions, information gathering and tracking, as well as opportunities for improvement.
  2. Communicate weekly with the Weekend Manager of Volunteer Services in regard to the success of the tour; attendance, and any problems or conflicts to be resolved.
  3. Demonstrate to place a high priority on serving families and children to alleviate fears about surgery and hospitalization.
  4. Check voicemail regularly and respond back to families and staff in a timely manor.
  5. Work with team to ensure pre surgical tour database and statistics are up to date.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
