At least 2 years work experience as a Special Police Officer; experience in a healthcare setting preferred.  Candidates with military or law enforcement experience preferred.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Valid US Driver's license required.  Effective oral and written communication skills.  Must be able to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.  Must be able to climb stairs in response to emergency situations.  Must be able to wear department issued body armor.  Must be able to work outdoors if necessary.  Ability to handle volatile situations under stressful conditions.  Familiarity with Microsoft Office. 
Must possess excellent customer service skills

Specific Requirements and Preferences
Knowledge of the criminal code in Washington, DC.  Experience working as an emergency responder (law enforcement, fire/rescue, military).  Knowledge of HIPPA rules and restrictions.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Special Police Officer commission from the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department

Specific Requirements and Preferences
Non-violent crisis intervention training;
CPR/First Aid/AED certification;
ASP/MED baton certification

Functional Accountabilities

  1. Perform productive security patrols of the hospital, garage and perimeter; recognize conditions which are or will compromise the security and/or safety of the organization and take immediate action to mitigate; proactively and consistently submit work orders to correct safety/security violation discovered during patrols.
  2. Immediately notify supervisors of security/safety-related problems or issues.
  3. Take proactive measures to mitigate thefts, disturbances and other criminal incidents.
  4. Check to ensure that visitors and staff members are wearing proper identification badges/passes; ensure that visitors are properly identified and proactively address issues with non-compliance with visitors which are observed during patrols; adhere to departmental and hospital policies, procedures and directives as it relates to the management and processing of visitors to the hospital.
  5. Adhere to post orders for all fixed and patrol positions.
Emergency Response
  1. Ensure a timely and appropriate response for emergengy situations.
  2. Ensure that the applicable policies, procedures and directives are followed according to the specifics of the emergency situation.
  3. Able to effectively de-escalate disruptive behavior.
  4. Able to remain in control of emotions and not take acting out behavior exhibited by others personally.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
