Specific Requirements and Preferences
At least 2 - 3 years in a Perioperative Services Assistant position or anesthesia tech position required.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Demonstrate ability to properly place monitor and EKG leads, oximeter, and BP cuff. Demonstrates knowledge of assembly and operations as well as cleaning of Fiberoptic scope.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Current certification from the American Society of Anesthesia Technologist and Technicians (ASA) Certification program or equivalent preferred.

Functional Accountabilities

Anesthesia Related Functions
  1. Assemble, clean and stock anesthesia equipment in assigned anesthetizing locations before and after the operative or diagnostic procedure; able to troubleshoot the anesthesia machine and equipment; set up cardiac and physiologic monitors such as calibrating arterial lines.
  2. Assist the anesthesiologist in establishing, monitoring, intubation, extubation, and arterial cannulation; assist the anesthesiologist by setting up Hotlines, humidified circuits; understand the concepts of Difficult Airway Mangement.
  3. Order supplies for department and ensure that adequate quantities of supplies are available; identify product needs for special orders to department manager.
Equipment Management
  1. Oversee the monitoring and documentation of all anesthesia equipment for safety, quality control, preventative maintenance and cleanliness and ensure the standards of infection control are met.
  2. Fill anesthesia machine of liquid anesthesia agent at the end of each week; replace soda absorber granules at the end of each week or sooner if needed.
  3. Review designated induction room/operating room equipment on a daily basis to ensure function and availability, include stretchers, oxygen tanks, oxygen gauges, and anesthesia monitors, suction devices.
  4. Perform Point of Care Testing (POCT) on all anesthesia related medical devices; report, document and seek repair of malfunctioning anesthesia related equipment.
  5. Report and document POCT results as per Hospital policy to include any variances to Chairman of Anesthesia or his/her designee.
  6. Clean and steriilize largynscope handles, blades, LMA and return them to their proper location.
  7. Responsible for fiberoptic bronchoscopy cart and malignant hyperthermia cart.
  8. Contact hospital supply contractors for major repairs or replacement of anesthesia equipment.
  9. Maintain adequate and up-to-date drug inventory daily and discards out -of-date drug invrntory daily; replenish anesthesia drug supplies daily.
  10. List readings for chemical thermometer and blood warmer thermometer.
  11. Assist anesthesia department with the charges for expensive anesthetic medical devices (i.e. double lumen ETT).
Nursing Support Related Functions
  1. Perform all activities following OSHA guideline and practices; observes aseptic principles.
  2. Assist in between case preparation include sending case carts to SPD, place trash in appropriate containers and location.
  3. Check expiration dates of medication placed in the medication refrigerator, mediprep station, medication cabinet. Returns expired medication to the pharmacy.

  1. Report patient/family concern/complaint to charge nurse immediately
  2. Seek assistance from charge nurse or care team member when confronted with an unfamiliar situation or problem.
  3. Obtain equipment, supplies, required services from other departments using appropriate method, tact and diplomacy.

  2. Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
