Child Life Internship (480 hours)


Required Skills/Knowledge

Knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development, advanced interpersonal skills, sensitivity to divergent cultures and child-rearing practices.



Required Licenses and Certifications

Candidate must be certified or eligible for child life certification.



Functional Accountabilities

Insures Effective Patient Care Plan is Developed, Implemented
  1. Make assessment of identified patients.
  2. Write patient care plans and developmental treatment plans, when appropriate.
  3. Provide range of therapeutic services, including orientation to hospital, medical play, and preparation for procedures, stress reduction techniques, behavioral interventions.
  4. Organize and monitor play activities for assigned patient care area(s).
  5. Provide supportive services to patients, parents, and siblings.
  6. Participate in patient/family education by providing age-appropriate materials and information.
  7. Provide information about educational services.
Effective Multidisciplinary Communication Established Regarding Patient & Family
  1. Communicate child life observations, assessments, and interventions to the health care team.
  2. Document significant interventions in the patient medical record.
  3. Participate in patient care conferences, treatment planning meetings, and team meetings.
Provides Education to staff and Patient/Family
  1. Provide educational sessions for staff and education/training for child life interns and practicum students.
  2. Provide education, training, and guidance to patient care volunteers.
  3. Participate in patient/family education by providing age-appropriate materials and information.
Safety
  1. Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
  2. Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation
  3. Stop in the face of uncertainty and takes time to resolve the situation
  4. Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication
  5. Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers
  6. Attend carefully to important details - practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review in order to self-check behavior and performance

  1. Meet with Child Life Supervisor for regular supervision, preparing agenda and discussing areas of concern.
  2. Respond to requests for service as stated in department standards.
  3. Participate in Child Life meetings and in departmental staff meetings.
  4. Meet all departmental requirements for chart recording, statistics, and other professional documentation and submit documents in a timely manner.
  5. Participate in departmental performance improvement activities.
  6. Plan absences in collaboration with Child Life staff.
  7. Participate in professional development activities.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
