Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge of statistics and advanced mathematics Proficiency in the use of wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Proven ability to communicate effectively with a multi-disciplinary research team Demonstrated experience in laboratory methods such as: gel electrophoresis, PCR analysis, protein purification and DNA purification. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as: MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Experience handling laboratory animals 



Functional Accountabilities

Responsible Conduct of Research
  1. Consistently demonstrate adherence with the standards for the responsible conduct of research.
  2. Maintain confidentiality of data as required.
  3. Plan, conduct, and manage research projects within the federal and institutional regulations and policies under the direction of the principal investigator.
  4. Responsible for appropriate use of research funds and resources.
  5. Comply with all annual job-related training requirements.
Performs laboratory work
  1. Perform routine and non-routine tests such as western blots, immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence as directed.
  2. Record and check results for completeness and accuracy.
  3. Perform tasks that may require familiarity with techniques and equipment.
Assists with project planning
  1. Assist with planning specific research protocols and procedures.
  2. Coordinate schedules of tests and procedures.
  3. Assist in the development and troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas.
Plans research projects
  1. In conjunction with Principle Investigator, modify methods and protocols.
Formulate and perform complex laboratory experiments, and analyzes and reports the data
  1. Formulate and defend hypotheses.
  2. Elaborate on design and execution of experiments that could test these hypotheses.
  3. Develop methods and protocols to implement the experiments, including gel electrophoresis, PCR analysis, protein purifications, and DNA purifications.
  4. Make detailed observations and keep an accurate laboratory notebook.
  5. Present and discuss work at weekly laboratory meetings and national symposia.
Supports project management
  1. Maintain awareness of deadlines and plan appropriately for upcoming staffing and project needs.
  2. Plan for completion of projects on time.
  3. Train and mentor new staff as needed.
  4. Assist with determining work assignments, schedules and priorities.
Maintains Data:
  1. Develop and modify databases as needed.
  2. Collect, codes and compile statistics (coding of data requires interpretation of data from a broad range of alternatives).
Promotes internal and external customer relations:
  1. Respond to both internal and external requests in an effective and friendly customer service manner.

  1. Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
  2. Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation

  7. Research professional journals and literature.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
