Qualifications

 Minimum Education
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.)

Specific Requirements and Preferences
Doctor of Pharmacy with a PGY2 ASHP Accredited Residency in Pediatrics or Infectious Diseases.

Minimum Work Experience
1 Year(s)

Specific Requirements and Preferences
At least 1 year of pharmacy experience in a pediatric, specialized or academic or clinical setting highly preferred.


Required Skills/Knowledge

Effective oral and written communication skills. Maintain a current knowledge base in area of specialty.



Required Licenses and Certifications

Pharmacist
Licensure or eligibility for licensure in the District of Columbia is required.



Functional Accountabilities

Order Processing
  1. Interpret medication orders, profile orders and oversee the packaging, labeling and distribution of medications.
  2. Input orders into pharmacy computer system for area of practice when appropriate.
Interventions/ Documentation
  1. Perform drug therapy monitoring and intervene as necessary on drug dosing, drug administration, drug interactions, side-effects and monitoring issues.
  2. Complete therapeutic drug monitoring consults and adverse reaction reports.
  3. Document all interventions and drug information.
Staff Development and Training
  1. Assist with the education, training, and general supervision of pharmacy residents.
  2. Coordinate experience of pharmacy students within organization.
  3. Coordinate the training of new pharmacists.
  4. Provide lectures and drug reviews to various professional groups and committees.
  5. Represent the Department on key committees of the Medical Center.
  6. Develop system changes, educational programs and interventions that result in the reduction of errors in practice; include prescribing errors, dispensing errors, and administration errors.
Clinical Services
  1. Take necessary steps to assure appropriate medication use throughout organization.
  2. Identify drugs/therapies that should be considered for further evaluation.
  3. Provide accurate and timely drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health professionals.
  4. Maintain an active, current clinical practice based on evidence-based medicine.
  5. Serve as a clinical specialist resource for pharmacists, nurses and physicians; address and follow up on all issues related to systems and patient care.
Quality Assurance
  1. Participate in and complete various assignments in the Department’s quality assessment program.
  2. Complete DUEs, inservices, and report ADRs per Department Standard.
  3. Assure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations (e.g. FDA, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, DOH, JCAHO).

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
