Specific Requirements and Preferences
At least 3 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience in community health, ambulatory care, school health or other related fields.

Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge and understanding of trends relating to school health as well as development patterns and needs of school-age children. Knowledge of the techniques of data collection for an analysis of health needs. Knowledge of a wide variety of medical conditions, diagnoses, and specific diseases. Ability to provide health counseling to school age children and families with a wide variety of health problems. Demonstrates knowledge of the roles of other school professionals and adjunct personnel and coordinates roles and responsibilities of the adjunct school health personnel within the school team.

Functional Accountabilities

Quality of Care
  1. Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of school nursing practice.
  2. Participate in quality assurance activities, as appropriate.
  3. Use the results of quality of care activities to initiate changes in school nursing practice, as appropriate.
  4. Continuously, strive to improve the quality and effectiveness of school health services.
  5. Consult with and utilize the expertise of other providers for student care, as needed, and make referrals, including provisions for continuity of care, as needed; employ counseling techniques and crisis-intervention strategies for individuals and groups.
  6. Act as a student and family advocate.
Program Management
  1. Manage school health services, as appropriate, to the nurse’s education, position and practice environment.
  2. Conduct school health needs assessment to identify current health problems and identify the need for new programs.
  3. Develop and implement needed health programs using a program planning process.
  4. Orient, provide training, document competency, and oversee the practice of Health Technicians, and Nursing Assistants, as appropriate to the school setting.
  5. Participate in environmental safety and health activities, e.g., indoor air quality, injury surveillance, and prevention.
  6. Adopt and utilize available technology, as appropriate to the work setting.
Health Education
  1. Assist students, families, the school staff and community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health promotion; communicate effectively with the student, family, school staff, community and other providers regarding student care and the role of the school nurse in the provision of care.
  2. Participate in the assessment of needs for health counseling and health instruction needs for the school community.
  3. Provide formal health instruction based on sound learning theory, as appropriate to student development levels.
  4. Provide individual and group health teaching and counseling for and with students; assist individual students to develop appropriate skills to advocate for themselves, based on age and developmental level.
  5. Act as a resource person to school staff on health promotion activities and material.
  6. Further the application of health promotion principles within all areas of school life, e.g., food service, custodial, etc.
Education and Resources
  1. Acquire and maintain current knowledge and competency in school nursing practice.
  2. Acquire knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty practice of school nursing on a regular and ongoing basis.
  3. Consistently participates in continuing education activities related to current clinical knowledge practice and professional issues
  4. Seeks experience to maintain current clinical skills and competence
  5. Assist the student, family, school staff and community to identify and secure appropriate and available services and resources to address health-related needs;
  6. Assists the student, family, school staff and community in becoming informed consumers about the costs, risks, and benefits of health promotion, health education, school health services, and individualized health interventions for students; collaborate with the student, family, staff, community, and other providers in the formulation of overall goals, time lines, the plan of care, and decisions related to care and the delivery of services.

  1. Promote the use of research findings in school nursing practice.
  2. Utilize available research to develop the health programs and individual client plans of care and interventions.
  3. Participate in research activities, as appropriate to the nurse’s education, position, and practice environment.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
